I don't think it's too bad actually, but:

1. Looks pretty generic (if 2.0 looks generic, I dunno how you can say that this doesn't!)
2. The top 728x90 ad needs to be below the menu
3. The top right 300x250 ad needs to be interchangeable with a 300x600 ad and needs to be directly below the 728x90
4. No recent headlines box
5. No regional breakdowns for the sales graphs
6. Looks a bit to clean and bright to me
7. I prefer the light text on dark backgrounds
8. Looks tiny on my 1680x1050 resolution

Listen, in all seriousness - all comments about 2.0 have been taken on board and there will be certain changes made... I'm not a particular fan of what you posted though unfortunately!

Revision - 3.1

Best I can tell if one Flash widgit was removed from the front page, or re arranged there would be no reason what so ever why this site could not load dynamicly and fill up 90% of everybodies screen. Hell you could make 2 versions of the widget and have the smaller one load on smaller screens.

Just a few comments:

Where did the dropdown menus go?

News article headlines need better visual separation from each other and sides of their containing box.

Sideways font is not easy to read at a glance and is usually avoided for that reason.

Sales areas should have note text in the headline or bottom telling the viewer that numbers are in units sold by retail.

Hot Topics is not intuitive as is.  Post titles should be clickable.  Microsoft's green is exceedingly bad against that background.

Between 1/3-1/2 of the viewing area on my screen is taken up by the header, ads, and the fairly useless newsrotater.  The two biggest points of interest for non-member visitors are sales numbers and news stories.  The more of those that are in the viewable area on-load, the more useful the website will be.

With the placement of Login, I would recommend javascripting a login box sliding down from that area (if javascript is enabled) in order to keep login functionality on the homepage.

Do you like this one more

Revision - 3.2

No 300x250 ad at the top right, most popular news is too big, no recent headlines, chart bars want to be at the top, no news rotator, colours still far too bright, big ad in the middle of the page doesn't work, etc etc

Well 3.1 was more geared toward your last critique, as well as this one.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

This is not true, they just released 2.0

Here's the content that's on the homepage organized from most imoprtant to least important:

  • 1)  Chartz Widget - This is why everyone from the most infrequent visitor to the daily visitor comes to the website, to see the status of the consoles.
  • 2)  Hardware and Software Sales - This is what your weekly/semi-regular visitors are coming to see.  They don't just want the totals, they want the the latest information on their favorite games.
  • 3)  News/Recent Headlines/Most Popular Stories - This is what the regular and daily users want to see.
  • 4)  Forum stuff (Hot Topics, Prediction League, Poll) - This is what the forum crowd want to see.  Doesn't matter where this stuff is as they'll find it.
  • 5)  News rotator.

The news rotator should go away IMO.

The people who only come for the sales and weekly sales figures don't care about the news.  They see their numbers and leave.  The people who come for the news scroll down to the stories and recent headlines right past the rotator.  Why should they sit and stare at a flash rotator for 30 seconds when there are 30+ articles below they can be clicking and looking at right now?

Rotating images and the like are good for a lot of websites and they add some character, however when you have a website with 10+ content items just on the homepage already competing for space, you don't need more character.  You need more space.

Even worse, not only is the rotator likely to be the least useful element on the page (next to the poll), it's also one of the two most memory intensive parts of the page.  Cutting off the rotator and the chartz widget cut Firefox's memory usage by 25%.  We can give the Chartz widget a pass since it is quite easily the most important element on the page, but the news rotator is not.

Cutting out the rotator would make the webpage load faster, use less memory (resulting in a better browsing experience), and make room for more important content.

I like the colors and the arrangements.

My ideal (not that practical) would be totally customisable layout. You would have Hot Topics, Recent Threads, Poll of the Week as self-contained widgets and you could arrange the number and layout of them on the page. You obviously wouldn't be able to affect the layout within those things, but it would be more personal and get rid of content I never use.

The default would still be everything of course.

For example: I would remove Most Popular Stories (but keep Recent Headlines), remove the Prediction League as I never use it, remove Poll of the Week, and add back Recent Threads to the main page. But that's my custom layout, and others are free to add in other things like Upcoming Releases.

@WOW - obviously you dislike the news rotator personally but there is a reason why every major videogame site uses one...

If gamespot jumped off a cliff...

... then IGN, Gametrailers, Shacknews and most other major game sites would follow them. Obviously they have done their market research and found that big banner images perform better than lists of news stories, same as our findings

Well since I can't change your mind, I'll just hope it works well for vgChartz.  Fair enough?
