Forums - Sales - Why PS3 can outsell XBOX 360 in overall sales

What's all this cock-a-doodle-do about PS3 needing to sell 77 k more per week on average, when we all know that when a system get's a price drop, has a killer app, holiday seasons and or hype can lead to a system selling 77k per day?

You may hate me but it ain't no lie:

Oh and who is worried about some next gen console coming out with better graphics when the market leader by far, (wii) is graphically not nearly as powerfull as it's competitors? The Company that drops their next console (which would need to be somthing so powerful that it makes the PS360 look like a Gamecube) isn't ushering in the next gen, they are ushering their departure from the console business.

Alot of people have been saying that it is impossible for the PS3 to outsell the 360 in terms of overall sales, and that it would require the PS3 to sell 77k a week more than the 360 to gain a lead in 2 years.

I think that PS3 doesn't need to outsell by 77k a week but rather the 360 will just start to sell less and less units until that difference is made. With a price cut for PS3 and gran turismo 5 i think that PS3 will be able to maintain 150k+ a week while 360 might go sub 100k

I also don't see the overall lifetime sales of 360 exceeding PS3 as new xbox may kill 360.

It doesn't matter if the PS3 starts selling more on average or if the X360 starts selling less on average.  The fact remains the sales difference per week needs to average 77k units for PS3 to overtake X360 in 2 years.

Here is how the math works.  You subtract the PS3 total from the X360 total to get the curent sales gap.   You divide this number by the total number of weeks in question (in this case 104 weeks - 2 years).  This gives you the required average weekly difference that is required.

Again it doesn't matter which console gains or falls, it's the sales difference per week that is important.

 This.

77k is quite a number. The PS3 had average weekly sales of 192k in 08. So the PS3 needs to top the Xbox360 sales by 40% of the average weekly sales last year. Of course starting today. I am not saying this is impossible, but it will happen at a time when this generation is at its end (if ever). In 2011, the Xbox360 is 6 years old, that is good time to announce the Xbox 3 if you ask me.

if u ignore christmas maybe. 360 got a 3 million lead just because this christmas. the ps3 can cut it like that just with a price cut ,and continue selling longer due being a cheap bluray and strong first party.

microsoft depends more on third party than sony (rather than halo and gears (which is by a THIRD PARTY) especially now sony pushing it first party alot.

i can see it happening, but i won't make much difference, i really would like microsoft to start being competitive in the consumer kinda way.

same service - FREE. and reliable hardware for once.

Is it just me or do several people in this not understand what a weekly AVEREAGE means?

Just for you guys, the AVERAGE can mean 10K during the regular weeks and 100's of K during the holidays so LONG AS THE AVERAGE IS 77K.

Come on fellas, it's not a hard concept. It doesn't matter how the numbers play out on any given week but the AVERAGE must be 77k for the PS3 to pass the X360 in 2 years time.

VGChartz is black now. This could be a very good indication that PS3 will outsell the XBox 360 in console sales. Time will reveal all.

You should try getting laid.  And I mean that in the most kind fashion.

I doubt it will happen, tough its possible... even if it only manages to get the difference sub 3 milllion worldwide, it will mostly win on the software front thanks for Japan and EU... but thats just my 5 cents :P

Oh yeh the X360 sales are going to drop a lot more then the PS3's since it's been out for 4 years already. I mean it's already half the price of the PS3 and it's selling in par with the PS3. The PS3 is still at a very high price so there can be many price cuts, big games, and a Slim PS3 to drive up the sales while the X360 can cut the price but it's already really cheap so it probably won't make that big of a deal, and X360 doesn't seem to have many big games coming out (at least for 2009), so the PS3 can easily outsell X360 in overall sales IMO.

PS. Welcome to VG Chartz!

I think the fact that the 140 million selling, almost 10 year old PS2 going from a dirt cheap $129 to dirtier cheap $99 caused it to outsell the PS3 last month in America disproves that theory somewhat.  As long as the Xbox is always cheaper than the PS3 then the sales will be close enough that I don't think the PS3 will ever catch it unless the 360 halts production before the PS3 does.

Most importantly, even if in the end the PS3 manages to tie the 360 or even squeek by it by a couple of million consoles that has to count as a failure to Sony this gen. Selling on par or slightly better than the 360 and losing BADLY to the Wii was certainly not the goal of Sony going into this generation and certainly not the predicted results by most people going in, especially Sony fans.

Fair point, however, it is hard to argue that the PS3 has a chance to outsell the 360 this gen "SIGNIFICANTLY."

So, basically, if everything falls into place for Sony, they have a chance to not come in last this gen.

They have a slight hope to outsell the most failure riddeled console of all time.

The bar for Sony is being set entirely too low.

Last gen, people would have laughed at the prosepect of a Nintendo home console beating a Playstation. Now, Sony is in a terrible position. Even with all that value in their console, and the fact that it is very well made, with great exclusives coming up, it still can't outsell the Xbox 360, despite the fact that the 360 is a year older, has no future lineup, has RRoD, while MS has actually been sued by many consumers for its consistant failure rate.

Is it possible for the PS3 to outsell the 360? Yeah. However, is that the best you can hope for? What about the PS2? What about the ground MS has made up this gen? Will the PS4 have the same brand advantage? Has the Xbox brand grown this gen? What about Nintendo?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Your whole theory is based off of dropping 360 sales... but year over year the 360 has increased while the PS3 has decreased.

A main reason that I don't think 360 sales will get hurt too badly despite lower tech is because multiplats are usually the best selling games each year and 9/10 multiplats run equal on both platforms or run better on the 360. They also sell more on 360. I don't think developers are going to go out of their way to maximize the PS3 version when it's the weaker performer of the two. Not because they hate Sony, but because it doesn't make any business sense to do so and at the end of the day, these are businesses.

Also, multiplats have great graphics. It's not like PS3 exclusives make multiplats look like sloppy productions or last gen titles. Even when games are specifically made for the PS3, they don't look that much better than games that are made for both. If the PS3 is seen as pretty much being the same as a 360, I don't think 360 will suffer to badly especially when the 360 sells for half the price. Sony's price drop is a rumor so far and we don't even know what it will be. If they drop it down to $349, I don't think that's gonna have much of an impact. MS will probably just drop $50 of their sku or do something like the elite bundle where they give you two top rated must have games (Halo 3 and Fable 2) while Sony either offers no bundle or they throw in some mediocre game that did sell well (ie a game that people weren't interested in buying to begin with).

Another thing, as time goes on tech gets cheaper. Blu-ray is becoming less and less of a selling point. I can goto Best Buy and find players for $150-$200. When the price drops down to where you can find normal ones for $99, I think Blu-ray totally stops being an issue. Especially if it's cheaper to buy a 360 and standalone blu-ray player than it is to buy a PS3.
