Forums - Sony - Hirai: I Think About PS3 Pricing Everyday

the number of games on PS3 is poor in japan but good here....10 months since release( 5 in Europe)and it has games as Heavenly Sword,Warhawk,NinjaGaiden Sigma,NHL08, The Darkness ,Sega Rally,Stranglehold,Resistence,Motorstorm,Oblivion,Virtua Fighter 5,Madden 08,Skate,Raibow Six Vegas ,GRAW2 ,Tiger Woods 08,Folklore,Hot Shots Golf ,Call of Duty 3,NBA Homecourt,NBA 2K,Lair ...etc etc

....better than the 360 last year and way better than Wii current library....
What most Sony fans fail to realize is that does not matter. You can't time warp the PS3's current lineup to last year to compete against the 360's. Comparing the PS3's current situation to the first year of the 360 is flawed argument. The PS3 is faltering now. It needs to do better now. The PS3 could have the best lineup on the market right now and it wouldn't matter. Price is the ultimate problem with the PS3. It's a problem that it will always have. It's a problem that will cost the PS3 the exclusive software it would need to attempt the comeback some seem to think it will make.

Hirai:

"I think about PS3 pricing every single day. It is that important a factor ... But I am not planning any immediate pricing action now,"

"Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me,"

On topic of SCE may acquire more developers:

"We wouldn't buy a company just because we can," he said. "Talks of an acquisition would emerge only when a company already has tight relations with us, its corporate culture is compatible with ours, its employees are working closely with us, and it can churn out strong software titles."

Patcher:

"I'm really not sure what they're thinking," he commented. "Hirai said no cut this year when asked the direct question, so I think the PS3 cut is unlikely until Spring. It now looks like the delay of Home and the lack of any killer games this year made them reconsider whether a price cut in 2007 would have much impact."

Pachter added, "I would not rule out a PS2 price cut, but it looks like we can put the PS3 cut to bed until some time early next year."

-----------

My Opinion: It realy looks like there will be no drop before next year. Maybe the 80 gig gets a little cheaper, but it sure doesn't look like that. Caused by the falling $ a price drop in USA gets more and more unlikley for me.

Why is it that everyone looks at the PS3's line up which is in it's second generation looking this good and the 360's third generation and say Sony doesnt have any good games. Sony's second generation titles are better looking then the 360's 2nd generation of games (Uncharted and UT3 looks better then Gears).

But we all know that the 80GB will have a price cut when the 60GB runs out.

This seems like a mistake. The sales numbers show that, anytime the PS3 is within $100 of the 360, it will have higher worldwide sales numbers. By being aggressive on price sooner rather than later, they're allowing the gap to go up higher than they should let it.

Can you give me a source for this? I was under the impression that it was just a rumour, but a lot of people are stating it as a fact.

No. X360 will be always cheaper - that's for sure but when all systems cost below $299 it means nothing. PS3 offers more than X (blu-ray player) and be aware situation right now isn't shitty in any way. X is selling better but c'mon we can't talk about PS3's humilation as for now. Regards games. Gamers want new games. Many people don't care about old games. No matter how good these games are. Sony provided few new IP's but we really have to wait for heavy hitters. PS3 line-up is strong and definitely as for now 2008 looks much brighter than for X360.

If they wait until Spring 08 to drop the price then they should be very aggressive and drop it 200 bucks, i.e. to 299.99. It worked for the IPhone.....

By the time the PS3 hits $299 this generation will have been decided already. The PS3 will at $299 in 4 quarter 2009 at the earliest. In the two plus years it takes the PS3 to get that pricing level the Wii and 360 will built and even larger lead over the PS3. Developers will have shifted the bulk of their sources away from PS3 by then and the situation will only worsen.

Even though I said this already in prior post in this thread. I'll say it again. You can't time warp the current PS3 back to 2006 to compare the 360 lineup of that time. Consumers are going to compare what is on the shelves now. They are going to see the price difference and expect the PS3 to be leaps and bound ahead of the 360. They are going to expect a better game lineup. Neither is true. It is why the PS3 is selling so poorly in comparison to its competitors and its predecessors.

Allow me for the moment to talk about Gears of War ...

Gears of War is rapidly approaching the 5,000,000 unit mark and has been bought by (roughly) half of all XBox 360 users, and probably somewhere near 50% of the rest of XBox 360 owners have rented, purchaced used or stolen the games. It is a AAA game by anyone's definition ...

With such a huge game it is surprising that the XBox 360 just passed the 10 Million unit mark recently.

The reason I bring this up is that the PS3 may have games which sell amazingly well but this does not necessarily translate into high hardware sales. The percentage of gamers who are willing to spend $300+ on a system is very small, and that means that the PS3's userbase is going to be very limited until it drops below $300. The question is how many of the always impatient publishers are going to wait for the PS3 to build its userbase when their investors will be demanding healthy returns on investment today?

@Happy squirrel

Remember that huge spike in xbox 360 sales in november? That was due to just one title Gears of war.

Halo 3 may do the same. The ps3 needs a huge shooter. Hopefully UT3 is amazing.
