Forums - Gaming - Why is everyone so fascinated with old games?

Your thread title and your post really threw me. When you said old games I thought you were talking about 8bit or 16bit but you meant PS2. I wasn't hugely into PS2 games back then and I'm not into them now. I do love 16bit games though because they are fuckin awesome!

Back in the day game development was so cheap and accessible that more people could do it, so there was a wider range of fresh and crazy ideas.  It took one person to design Tetris, and he had a friend make block graphics for it.  Anybody with programming skills could have a crazy dream, wake up, and make a very unique video game out of it.  Now it takes a team of hundreds of expert programmers to design a 6 hour romp through Germany.

For example,

The games of yesterday involved high speed blue hedgehogs, earthworms in super suites, mutant frogs, child cavemen, Michael Jackson, dolphins, Apes, gum eating blobs and Noids (whatever they were). The games of today that aren't made by Nintendo involve guys shooting other guys...

Is it really a valid question why gaming nostalgia is so prominent?

Stof's quote should be immortalized and disseminated across the internet.

mario shot fire balls,   he jumped on gumbas which i equate to knifing someone, mario kart you shot people,  the violence is still there just covered up like an anvil to wile e coyote  unless your talking about tetris or something

not really, sorry if i made my point badly, but its always been guys shooting other guys or some variation there of , unless as i said you count tetris and stuff like that, now while tetris was fun, i dont pull out my old game boy and go oh boy time for tetris. but i do fire up my NES to see how far i can make in on super mario brothers on one life.  same thing today just guys shooting guys. guys running over guys, on all platforms

all of these games were versions of guy shoots guy.   sonic, thats hit and runs like in GTA,   eatherworms did shoot people, frogs beat the shit out of thigs, i must say i cant recall playing the MJ game,  i think i played noids but cant remember it clearly, and i feel bad that some of those others feel familer but the game escapes me .... apes i take it is ape escape, only ever played the ps underground demo and its kinda fuzzy at this point always ment to go back and try it

We're talking about the variety of characters. Now the majority of characters are humans. I'm a human, so I think that's boring. I want more games where I can be wacky crazy stuff.

I could care less for old games as most of them were just horrible. They were great ones too and people have fond memories of them since they grew up playing them, Just like power rangers, i cant believe i ever loved that show.

Great old games rock! I never sell any good ones from my collection and re-play some of them, too. The older you get older games make u more happy. I like anime, too and I still think the older anime feels better with the hand drawn and coloured cells compared to the all new and all very fresh PC done ones.

Tho, new games like MGS4, LBP, KZ2, Metroid Prime, Mario Galaxy and Halo rock even more!
