Forums - Sony - The PS3 is underrated.

I guess that the question about PS3 being overpriced or not depends on how many of its functions you use.
If you play games, watch BR, etc.. then PS3 may be a fair deal, maybe even a good deal.
If you only want to play games I can see why some thinks it is overpriced.

I was talking about the pure value of its electronical parts, not really about it functionality or its true usefullness to the consumer. Sony clearly had different idea's about that then the majority of the gaming crowd, including me.

And i'm not under anyone's spin. I share your point about seemingly unneeded things added to the ps3.  Sony should allow a similar choosing of components, like Microsoft. That's far more buyerfriendly and cheaper. As noted in other threads, Sony used Blu-Ray (in the PS3) to win the format war and as a consequence lost the console war. Sony will be forced to a pricecut sooner or later, no matter the loss. Or they would let the PS3 die.

Believe it or not, accepting the believe that "Blu-Ray isn't necessary for gaming" is a lot more than most would admit to on this forum.

Your posts are fine. I agree with most of them. I understand that you are right, when it comes to the value of each electrical part. I was simply questioning the necessity of some of those parts, and why they were included.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I agree with you 100 percent. If you love online gaming, must have a Blu-Ray machine, and refuse to hook up a cable to your console in this day and age, then the PS3 is probably a fair value. 200 dollars for those things isn't necessarily a gouge, when you look at what M$ are charging.

However, I still wouldn't call it a bargin. I'd say, that assuming you want all of those features, it is "not overpriced." If you don't want any of them, it most certainly is overprice, imho.

underrated or overpriced?

That would be expensive. Being that Sony is still losing money, it's not overpriced.

Expensive is having too high a price. Overpriced would be a company charging a high price to earn more profit. The Wii, DS, and PSP are overpriced.

The reason Sony's console is so expensive is because of the Blu-Ray device. The reason Sony put the Blu-Ray device in the console is so they could own the next home video medium. The reason they wanted to own that, is because it would make them far more profit than a first place console ever could.

So yes, the PS3 is expensive, because Sony is trying to make huge profits on Blu-Ray, by introducing it via the PS3.

It is a simply seperation by degree, but the PS3 is "overpriced" by your logic, if you look at the Blu-Ray addition as an attempt to garner profit though early adoption by gamers.

Yes, but they are still losing money on the PS3. And until they're making significant profit on it at the $400 price, then I don't think it can be called overpriced.

(Of course, you can still think expensive things aren't worth it)

Problem?

It costs 100 dollars more than it's worth.

Besides that, yeah, it's great.

by my math, and by sonys financial reports, youre 100% wrong. the ps3 is actually about $440 worth of equipment. selling at $400, its $40 less than its worth. if it was "$100 more than its worth," sony would be incredibly profitable, despite their other technology's struggles.

"Worth" is not the cost of the parts, it is how much a buyer will accept to pay for it in a free market.

Thus, you're both wrong in some measure. You're talking about a different quantity (production cost), and Zen is extending his opinion or personal evaluation on how much it's worth for him to the general public (about 15-20% less than 360 buyers each week deem the PS3 worth that amount or more, as they state with their wallet by buying one).

For me there are other PS3 features that made it worth my €400, on top of me wanting a good, constantly up-to-date BluRay player and WiFi enabled console that could play the exclusives I was interested in:

- easily replaceable HDD, that doesn't invalid the warranty. I could upgrade it to 350GB for about €40.

- easy dual-boot into Linux, supported out of the box by the system software. I can now play all my emulators on my 42" Plasma from my couch instead that on my computer in the studio.

Just as an example of two rather rarely requested features, underlining that saying that a console is "worth" its price by itself is meaningless. It is entirely dependant on the user's needs and wishes.

For me and my needs, it was a bargain, and I would have paid even more for it. It has nothing to do with Sony's spin, only with the features I value.

As others have said. Overpriced not underrated.

I'm not a fanboy, I just try to tip the balance in favor of logic and common sense.

Hell yeah!

Playstation delivers, unlike others...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.
