Forums - Sales Discussion - Heavenly Sword - 77.445 first week- flop or not flop sales?

The game flopped deal with it.

Not at all, 77K for just a few days of sales is quite good, considering the US install base of PS3s is only 2 million. Also, most sales take place in the holiday season, so we'll just have to see how it does over the next six months. Not all games have quick starts; some take time to get going. This is true of all mass media, incidentally - books, novels, films, TV work the same way. Some become hits overnight, others take time.

My favorite example is the Bollywood blockbuster "Sholay". A rock 'em , sock 'em film, released in the mid-1970s. After the first week, everyone thought it was doomed - the theaters were half-full. Usually, this means the film is a bomb. The second week, still half-full. The producers were in despair. The third week... three-quarters full. By the fourth week, "Sholay" had become a sensation. It would go on to break every box office record in India.

Vizunary what you are looking for is called a fan site. Where you are at is a website dedicated to discussing the console war. Perhaps if you cannot handle the cold hard truth then perhaps it is time to move on. You cannot reject this reality and substitute your own. This site is what it is. Now if you want to color your world happy then a fan site is the place for you.

However this games sales are indicative of trends, the health of a particular console, and the health of the software on that console. Quite frankly it would be highly irregular not to discuss such a pivotal development. Your right some of these posters do not care about this game in and of itself, and will view it as merely a artifact.

However that does not mean they have no right to analyze it with cold hard logic the way a archaeologist will handle a mummified corpse. There is no need to be particularly interested in the person it was, or develop any feelings of attachment. They are looking for answers not there to commune with the dead. There is no crime, and quite frankly its ludicrous to claim there is one.

I suggest if you cannot handle that way of looking at gaming then its time for you to move on to a fan site. Your looking for something else then this site. Nothing wrong with that, but your feelings are just going to get hurt if you let yourself get attached to games that are going to receive postmortem examinations in front of you. Thats what happens on this site.

Ya know, Johnny ... I'll give it to you, you definitely stick to your guns. But ...

MGS4, no matter how bady the PS3 could do, will be on the PS3.

I will take my crow like a man if it gets cancelled.

So, I expect the same from you!

Ya but that crow goes down easy lol.  If you end up being wrong about that I don't think many people can give you a hard time considering I think 99.9% of the members agree with you.  I will be beyond shocked if it gets canceled....but I will admit that if HS does badly it will be a step in that direction....only problem is I think we are miles away from that and a step doesn't help that much.

To Each Man, Responsibility

It's a flop.

An absolutely MASSIVE flop.

I don't know how in the hell anyone from any stroke can say otherwise? It's the same as Lair...

Both games sold as little as Blue Dragon.

I consider Metroid Prime 3 to be a relative flop, so these are absolute belly whackers.

Maybe some PS3 fans (like me) should hype games to be AAA titles that have a known track record of being good sellers (GT, MGS, FF, R&C) rather than unknown franchises that have yet to prove themselves (Lair, HS) HS is not a flop....yet. Lets just wait and see its sales after 2 weeks. And if this game is a flop, oh well. MGS4, GT5, UT3 and Ratchet and Clank will be around the corner, and those are games that will be successful. There is no doubt in my mind.

70k plus for the next couple of weeks.

So HS will essentially have 0% drops for the next couple of weeks?

That may be the dumbest prediction I have ever read in this forum.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

All the Sony people were expecting it to sell almost twice as much as it did, and a bunch of people said they'd be very dissapointed if it didn't do 200k, and now this is not a flop?

There's a lot of revisionist history going on around here lately.

It's a very poor start and if the game did indeed cost $20 million to create it will probably never turn a profit. On the plus side it will most likely help to sell a few extra PS3s this holiday season and keep current owners slightly happier until the bigger exclusives arrive next year.

i know exactly what this site is, thanks for the in depth explanation, nonetheless... so your telling me that johnlucas chiming in on how "MGS4 will not go to the PS3" or happysquirrel simply stopping by to say "i always said it would flop" are somehow constructive arguments in a sales discussion? many posters seem "giddy" at the sound of anything negative about the PS3, these are the people i was referring to and they know who they are. i feel that my reasoning for this incessant negativeness about the PS3 is exactly what i posted before. i never said this game was god's gift... i always said it would be visually impressive and fun, so it lived up to my expectations thus far. and sorry but i think it's only fair to use hollywood's generally excepted definition of a flop, a project that lost money... FF: the spirits within was a flop, HS is not quite a flop as of yet, they didn't even pull waterworld out of theaters the 1st weekend, they let it suck for awhile... btw, my feelings aren't hurt... i'm drinking =)

Remember that Metroid Prime 3 and Bioshock were both on shelves for 4 days and still sold well over 3 times as many units as Heavenly Sword has ...

For a highly anticipated game, often cited as a major reason why people will buy a PS3, (roughly) 75,000 units sold in its first day would be a disapointment

I havent been on these forums long enough but you probably predicted MotorStorm and Resistance to flop..they didnt.

That would be silly.  They were launch games.  Launch games are like the old saying about being chased by a bear.  You don't have to outrun the bear, you have to outrun the other people.

Games are going to be bought at launch no matter what, so you don't need to make a game worthy of selling over a million, you just need to make better games then the other few games that are coming out around launch. (Not saying resistance is a bad game, or motorstorm even, though I didn't like motorstorm at all.  Just saying it would be stupid to predict they would sell bad because even if they were mediocre games they would of sold well because they were launch games and the rest of the PS3 launch games were pretty much trash.)
