Forums - Sony - The PS2 is competing in this generation.

According to some, the Wii is not competing in this generation. The argument used to shoot down that assumption and say that the Wii is competing with the HD twins is often something along the lines of: 'If the Wii wasn't there then the PS3 and 360 would have higher sales.' This is true, but the same can be said of the Playstation 2.

Last week the PS2 sold over 62 thousand consoles and since the three 'current gen' consoles launched, it has sold millions. If the PS2 was not on sale it is without doubt that the other three consoles would have higher sales, therefore we can conclude that the PS2 is in competition with the current '7th gen' consoles and deserves to be talked about as such.

Well, duh.

The fact remains that it is almost 9 years old, hardly receives any quality software anymore, and the hardware is pretty outdated.

It's still awesome, and it's still got the best library of any console, but it's not worth discussing anymore.

No, read my post. I love the PS2, it's my favourite console of all time.

It's just...old.

Once again, the Wii is competing in this 'generation' because it was released around the same time as the 360/PS3. The PS2 was not. Generations deal with time, and nothing else.

That is all.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

If it weren't for hamburgers, more Wiis, PS3s, and 360s would be sold because people would have more money. Last week, McDonald's sold more than a million hamburgers, therefor we should count McDonald's in too.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

i've been saying the same thing for well over a year now. while a large number of companies are still making PS2 only games, the system hasen't been 86 (like the Xbox, gamecube, and other systems) and the system is still selling, The deuce still needs to be viewed as a player in the videoo game market. Hell, the deuce is preventing money from going elsewhere.

Yes the PS2 is competing AGAINST the other consoles...it is part of the market, so it competes against the consoles of this generation, but it is not a console OF this generation.

The PS1 competed against the PS2/GC and Xbox.... the SNES even outsold the PS1 for a while, and the NES competed against the MegaDrive, TurboGrafx and SNES.

The term "generation" is used to divide the consoles up into groups to follow major hardware revisions (Wii is a hardware revision from GameCube, X360 from XB etc).... The Market is a different thing.... and everything in it that is selling is competing against everything else.... it is best to view this on a weekly or yearly basis, or within set time periods that are EQUAL for all consoles (which is why PS2 is included in the weekly and yearly figures)
The generation is viewed differently, and time doesn't really matter (for instance if the N64 had for some reason outlasted the PS1, and eventually outsold it it would have been the victor of it's generation, even though after the PS1 died it would not have been competing against it in the market anymore)

Does that make Bread and Water the consumer electronic products of the century??
