| rocketpig said: Reading comprehension FTL. Ben never questioned ioi's numbers and the disrepency between MS and ioi's numbers are within reason. He's not attacking VGCharts, he's just opening up a line of discussion about some numbers he found quoted from MS. Some of you need to get your panties out of a bunch... There is nothing wrong with this thread and Ben just wanted to share information he found on the net. You can argue the validity of these numbers (which, I suspect is why Ben posted them in the first place) but to outright attack Ben for posting them is foolish and immature. No one is perfect and neither is ioi or VGChartz, though they're as accurate as can be given the information available. Calm down, people. |

There is nothing wrong with posting a news article that seems in conflict with this site's numbers. If anything it allows us to examine it and figure out if we are wrong or if they are and improve the site's credability by addressing the issue rather than hiding from it.
There is simply no need to jump on somebody for posting a legit thread topic.
There is nothing wrong with posting the article. It's just frustrating to repeat over and over and over and over explaining the difference between retail sales and consumer sales.
It's 11.6 million shipped period. Nothing else. No other imply. 11.6 million units of 360 as of the end of June 2007 have been shipped. Anything else is predictions, estimates, or simply bullshit.
VGcharts estimates for sold to customer is as good as its going to get right now.

I don't think that is the case here though. I think the OP knows the difference I think he intepreted the article incorrectly is all.
The "11.6m shipped in June" figure is the only thing the article asserts as a fact, the idea that those have sold out since then is delivered very meekly and, in my mind at least, is not an assertion of fact but rather the writer's supposition. Because if it is a matter of fact then they failed miserable to convey it as such.

MS's own press releases on numbers sold is a pretty solid indicator of actual numbers. And it clearly says 'sold', not shipped -- the distinction is laid out in the article. Why does this bother you so much? VGChartz is extremely close to this number without adding any of September (where it's been implied 360 has picked up significantly). I think this press release is actually a testament to what a fantastic job ioi is doing. To be so close to the actual numbers without access to the same tools/resources that MS itself has is astonishing.
Here is the link to the press release in its entirely (via Kotaku): LINK

Did you actually read the press release and think about some of the things it said? If you did and you still think it's a pretty solid indicator of the actual numbers then you are probably using the new math.
my guess in no.
i dont think it could be 11.6.
Im thinkin 11.1, too many ppl saying too many numbers. haha
I am just taking in all the benefits of the console war.

MS, Sony and Nintendo all sell their consoles to retailers, not consumers. This is a common method of reporting sales in dozens of industries across the globe. They report the figure as sold since to them itIS sold...to a retailer of which they are licensed to sell the product to consumers.
Look up reseller on the Internet and you'll get a better understanding of the relationship between manufacturer and retailer.
