Forums - Gaming - Should Sony drop the PS2 to focus more on the PS3?

It's making them money... They shouldn't stop.

Sony has to keep the PS2 going, its making them money and making each PS3 sale sting less. Now if they had made the PS3 have full backwards compatability with the PS2 then they wouldn't have some of the problems they are having, but that's a subject for another time.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I am glad, though, that you brought that up. The PS3 did have somewhat backwards compatibility with a lot of PS1 and PS2 games. But they took that out of new models recently to cut costs. Although I fail to see how moddifying the PS3 laser to play PS3 games only saves them that much money, though. I did hear there's an update for certain PS3 models, but not others. Smells like a ripoff.

To flip this, who thinks Sony should drop PS3 support to focus more on PS2? I know, that's stupid to say. Sony making a move to support it's profitable hardware? No thanks. Let's pump more money into the loss leading platform and keep the focus there. Just half ass support the other two profitable platforms just enough to help offset the enormous bleeding of PS3. No that's stupid. Let's just drop support for a console that sells itself, has continuing third party support and brings in enough money to make SCE not look completely hopeless as a division. While we're at it, let's ask them to drop PSP support too.

If they wanted more PS3 sales then they should have killed the PS2 two and a half years ago

But since PS2 is making them money and they promised a 10 year plan, they're doing the right thing keeping it alive

theres absolutely no need to cut off the PS2, but if it meant ps2 backwards compatibility for the PS3 then run that thing into the ground so i can justify a PS3 purchase >.>

The early versions (as in, launch hardware) had hardware backwards compatibility with PS2 games (and i assume PS1 games). the second batch had software compatibility for PS2 games, while the current batch doesnt even have that. I find it hard to believe that software emulation for the PS2 would cost them all that much to implement on the PS3 so i would immediately discount that as justification (even if it does add a considerable cost, i doubt its more than 50 bucks, at which i would imagine most people would pay 50 bucks for it to come with PS2 emulation). no, i would think the reason why BC was dropped for the PS3 was simply to keep the PS2 alive, which continues to be a steady source of revenue.

Ps2 sells because its a high quality DVD player.

You're joking right? You think high quality DVD players still retail for $99? Also you actually think PS2 is a high quality DVD player? You must have forgotten the lens issues.

my friends ps2s are collecting dust, sony dont need BC back.its a waste of money and time. they need to support the ps2 until it doesnt sell anymore.
