Forums - Microsoft - Why is Microsoft killing off PC gaming?

Megadude just wants to bash MS.

Millions of big pirates on PC. Enuff said.

Around the Network

Whatever, there is no point in arguing this. The fact is that piracy makes up for 40% of installed games these days and without it developers would be much better off. Even while PC gaming grows, so will piracy until eventually the majority off all PC games played will be pirated and the developers will really be hurting. Also, development for PC is much more difficult than for a console. The consoles all share the same hardware so it is simple to optimize while with PC's you have to make it work on thousands of different part combinations.

PC genre is dying for hardcore gamers, all because of piracy. No big budget exclusives are made for the PC anymore. Even Critek started to develop their games for consoles. Blizzard makes their games for old PCs, but I fink they too will soon start to make games for consoles.

There is not much use of these high end grafix cards for PC because the age of PC grafix power house is over.

Console is the platform of choice for developers that want to make money with developing something else than just MMOs and Flash games.

How is PC dieing for hardcore gamers when it's the only platform for hardcore genres like Adventure and Simulation?!

Big Budgets?! HAH!! How much money are developers/publishers losing money on those games?! That's why we're seeing EA, Square-Enix and Capcom developing more and more for PC, while leaving HD Consoles behind somewhat.

There are definitely more Big Budget games coming to PC than any console anyway.

Live is now free so it isn't a reason anymore, although they did try charge from online gaming.

But there is also an issue of license fees. PC (and Mac) doesn't have license fees which is one reason why games are cheaper on PC. WoW has made huge profits but MS doesn't get any money from sales of WoW. And neither from Sims, Starcraft, Diablo etc. Only PC games which gives MS profits directly are published by MS. MS only gets money by selling development tools and indirectly through selling Windows. But there are many development tools from other companies (even open-source tools) too so you don't have to use them either.

I find it super sad when World of Crapcraft is BY FAR the most successful game on PC... Oh and counterstrike. It's like taking a trip back in time 7 years.

World of Warcraft is BY FAR the most successful game on ANY platform. Not only that, but it is also more successful than the entire MGS, Halo and GTA franchises combined. That's how big WoW is.

World of Warcraft isn't even in the league of franchises that sold over 50 M copies (You can even be cheap and add its sales with the original Warcraft). It is not the most succesful game on any platform. Mario is the have yet to be surpassed with over 200 M copies in its franchise sold, with Pokemon close behind it. The Sims has even sold more copies that WOW, are you kidding me? Half-Life has even outsold the World of Warcraft MMO franchise.

The Sims>WOW>StarCraft>Half Life>Guild Wars>Myth>Counter Strike (PC games)

WOW and Guild Wars are huge because people pay them monthly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

Top ten best-selling video game franchises:

1. Mario (201 million)

2. Pokémon (186 million)

3. The Sims (100 million)

4. Need for Speed (Almost 100 million)

5. Final Fantasy (85 million)

6. Grand Theft Auto (70 million)

7. Madden NFL (70 million)

8. Tetris (70 million)

9. FIFA (65 million)

10. Tom Clancy (55 million, includes Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell franchises)

Of course, but we're talking about copies sold.

You are so wrong. In terms of profit, World of Warcraft no doubt made more money than Halo, GTA and MGS franchises combined!!! We are NOT talking about copies sold because only less than half of WoW costumers buy or need to buy the game.

World of Warcraft is bigger than any console franchise, profit-wise and  popularity-wise.

First of all, I never stated that Halo made more money than WOW. Secondly, the first three Halo games outsold WOW's first game with expansions in copies sold (even without PC versions, or Halo Wars). Over 22 million copies really. There...now I said it. If you're talking about premiums on games, then really you shouldn't put WOW up against Halo or any series, because of the constant monthly cashflow, when the competition doesn't have premiums themselves. WOW is very profitable, I agree; however, I call bullshit on that game being bigger than any console game.

MS indirectly profits from Blizzard PC sales. They made a pretty big deal with Blizzard to handle advertising over Battle.net.

The future of pc gaming is gonna be browser based along the lines of InstantAction's service or Quake Live. PopCap games and its ilk will also continue to help pc gaming grow.

I agree that the width of genres is greater on PC, and that's great. But honestly those two u mention are very small niche.

I disagree about budgets. Yes, many big budget multiplatform like RE5; Assssins Creed and CoD still get their PC version (often with a few months delay though), but when it comes to exclusives, Crisis and Mpire Total war was the last big budget PC xclusives.

I completely disagree in that regard, how many people upgrade their PC year on year so they can run games at the highest settings.  The hardcore market will always want better graphics and this will not be possible through remote gaming.

Definitely not going back to NES graphics.
