Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Forecasts Miss Estimates as Wii Sales Slow

For fart's sake. It is still up to what software Nintendo announces for Fall/Holiday. Projecting sales to be flat/go down doesn't mean a lot.

Nintendo took a massive wallop from exchange rates, and they totally blew it last holiday with Animal Crossing and Wii Music... But overall their sales and profits still went up from the previous year. Now things are (still) up to their ability to deliver exciting new software experiences this year.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

I always found puzzling that the wii has been selling like crazy for 2+ years and just for a couple of months of NOT THAT LOW sales and suddenly "the trend is going downwards"? what about america and europe? does that sales doesn't count anymore?

Really that's pathetic.

I find it strange that people are talking about estimates and forecasts negatively when it's the analesys that have always been off every year since the Wii and DS launched.

First the analyses under values while Nintendo remained conservative, now the analyses are over estimating and getting on Nintendo case for being conservative?

And you guys are talking that you should be valuing the analyzers? Nintendo will always be cautious and do what they to do to make their business run as much as possible. That's the only thing analyses just be concerned with.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

US and European sales have been falling as well. The Wii marketshare has been falling everywhere.

You do realise that Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii launched in that 4-5 week time frame last year, don't you?

When you factor that out, you also need to understand that Spring is the slowest sales period of the year.

Follow that up with many huge games for the rest of the year in contrast with very few last year and I cannot fathom how anyone can predict fewer sales this year than last year or that this 4-5 week trend is somehow permanent.

MS is making money at the moment. The divison was in the red, because of slow Zune-sales, R&D for Zune HD, Windows Mobile Update and most of all slow sales of Mac Office.

Show me one shred of evidence that backs up your statement. As for Ninty estimates, seems more like the analysts getting a little carried away with their estimates than Ninty generally having an issue with sales.

To be fair in Japan the sales for this year so far compared to last year AND the year before are down a hell of a lot... they are about a 1/3 of both those years.

I dont think that has anything to do with game releases and everything to do with demand.

Are you serious? NO! You can not be. Just look at what the JRPGs have done for the sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan. When that console first released no one thought that it would have a chance to sell a million units. Now with the help of software that actually interest the Japanese gamers the sales have increased. This is the same for the PSP and the PS3.

The PS3 did not beat the Wii because people just went out and started buying PS3s. Major software that interested gamers are what helped the PS3 to sale.

The bottom line is that you want the Wii to fail and this colors your view of sales figures of the Wii in Japan. This is why you state that major releases will not help the Wii but as I've shown, they helped all the other consoles.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
