Same answer I always give:

If you start excluding, or making out as special, certain games for one reason or another, where does it stop? Most of the games in the VGC top 50 would need asterisks.

Wii Sports - Bundled, therefore doesn't count
Wii Fit - People could be buying it for the board, therefore doesn't count
Monster Hunter G - It's a port so it "would have sold higher" if it had been new, therefore doesn't count
Pokemon Platinum - It's 99% the same game as D/P, why is it counted seperate, therefore doesn't count
MKWii - People could be buying for the wheel, therefore doesn't count
Wii Play - People buy for the controller, therefore doesn't count
Killzone 2 - Bundling distorts sales, therefore doesn't count
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Only selling because people buy both, therefore doesn't count
Professor Layton - It's just a compilation of puzzles that already exist in print, therefore doesn't count
New Super Mario Bros. - Bundling distorts sales, therefore doesn't count
The Godfather II - Multplat means some people buy both, therefore doesn't count
Halo 3 - People just bought it for the limited edition 360, therefore doesn't count
Mario Tennis - GC Remake with Wii controls tacked on, therefore doesn't count
Dynasty Warriors - Game isn't high enough quality (OP gave this as a reason), therefore doesn't count

So I can do this too. Maybe every word on VGC should have an asterisk with five pages of qualification and "what if"s.

Sorry but these examples are all stupid.   The difference between all of these and Wii Sports is that you have a CHOICE if you are going to own these or not.  You can buy a Wii or DS and not have to own these.

If you buy a Wii you are getting Wii Sports, like it or not.  Wii Sports is therefor just part of the Wii package and not a sale.

What about people who actually wanted wii sports? Their obvious sales just shouldn't count?

If they want Wii Sports they are fortunate that it is part of the Wii package and they do not have to buy it.

So even if you bought the wii only for wii sports your sales don't count? That's just not fair.

I'm pretty sure Wii Sports is the only game this gen that has been bundled with its console since the day its console first released.  So, the only way those other games could measure up fairly would also be if they had been bundled with their consoles since day one.

And if New Super Mario Bros. had been bundled with the DS since Day One for the DS, then it would have sold over 100,000,000 copies.

This is not about fairness.

You yourself said in the OP that you don't think Wii Sports's sales are relevant because it "just isn't that good".

Well, it is no better than an average game anyway. 76 doesn't equal greatness.

Their opinion. It's completely up to the consumer. If VGchartz did this they would have to it to every game bundled with something, which is stupid.

Or they could remove the game totally from the sales charts because there's no way to know how much it would sell on its own other than by going with the Japanese data.

Yeah but however to  many people who own that game(the expanded audience) the 76 game is 100 times better then that 91-95 game that comes out 3-4 times a year. You can't always go by Metacritic because by that scale MKWii and Wii Fit are sub par games that doesn't equal greatness.

At this point we will never know what the sales of Wii Sports would of been if it had never been bundled. We also will never know that for Super Mario Bros or Super Mario World(which Wii Sports outsold in Japan BTW). We also will never know for Tetris or Altered Beast.

WSR will be our greatest hint as I said and I do expect higher sales in Japan(thanks to the increase in userbase and its newness) but overall I expect it to sell less world wide by a fair portion. That said I expect WSR to sell more than GTA:SA which would be the highest selling non bundled game before this gen.

WSR will only be no better than the average game because it will probably only get a 60-80 on Metacritic.......Unless these publications fear a backlash from giving a popular game such a low score.

Just like Brain Age with a 77 on MetaCritic no "better" than your average game and selling 17.5 million because it wasn't a game that alot of people liked or the 83 that Nintendogs recieved on Metacritic in which 22 million+ people bought because no one liked that game.

Or it could be that ratings for these types of games aren't realy all of that accurate since there is little in the gaming media to properly represent that demographic. It is more Akin to asking a Sci Fi fan if they liked "The English Patient" then actual review.

Well, Halo 3 is bundled in some areas, along with Lego Indy, and Kung Fu panda. LBP, Mario Kart Wii, Link's Crossbow training, Wii play, Wii Fit, SMB, and countless others can't be included. This idea is incredibly unthought out. Wii sports is actually helping Wii Numbers, so going by your logic, we shouldn't be including the Wii, because we can't tell how much it would sell on it's own other than going by Japanese data. Nicely done.

If you want to put an asterisk by every game that has ever been bundled with a console, that's fine. You'll be able to knock out a fair number of Mario and Pokemon games that way.

Just don't forget to put asterisks by MGS4, Halo 3, and many of your other favorite non-Nintendo franchises as well.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

I agree with the OP but i do not think wii sports would have outsold SMB without bundling.
