Seems like a lot of excuses for why their games haven't had outstanding sales. Perhaps they should have mentioned racing is a very competitive genre and PGR isn't that unique. I can't imagine the series will become a big success now that they aren't Microsoft published.
Edit: On a side note I want to mention this...
LARGEST LICENSED SOUNDTRACK INCLUDED IN A RACING GAME 90 licensed songs across 9 genres make up Project Gotham Racing’s soundtrack, the largest of its kind in any racing game.
This game has a horrible soundtrack! Quanity >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Quality

Of course, peple can make money from fraud or anti-competitive behaviour- espeically if they get away with it.

They think that they can get similar results by offering special deals to third party developers, reducing the risk to their own bottom line. I guess we'll see how that works out for them in the end, but in the short term, they seem to be pissing off their fanbase. |
Ok, I edited the main list with another dead developer.
Tease.
I would be sympathetic but those reasons he gave for all those game "underselling" really annoyed me. Cry much?
Not to mention if I was the publisher and my developer was really disorganised and left things to too much chance at the last minute I'd get crabby aswell.

From a financial standpoint, it is a superior strategy. Controlling the IP instead of creating IP allows for a much broader portfolio offering. When something awesome comes along, they can secure exclusivity. Plus they have kept the 2 studios most likely to create innovative and franchisable IPs, Rare and Lionhead.
MS employees are super expensive. With publishing deals, no expense gets recorded until sales occur thus smoothing out earnings, which is a good thing for MS.
The sales excuses are hysterical.
As for MS and game studios, it looks like to me MS is moving away from the studio concept and moving to a model more similiar to other products. Developers at MS really have free reign to move from product to product (of course team has to have a need that fits the person) rather than being assigned to a team. Having studios running themselves gets in the way.
After all MS headcount has jumped from like 40,000 in 2000 to close to 100,000 now. Good deal of them likely to be building games.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Microsoft still has these first party companies: Lionhead Rare Turn 10 The new studio that will be making Halo games. Which has several people who worked at Bungie on the original Halo games. The Xbox Live Arcade Team Don't forget all the third party companies that work pretty much exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC: Bungie (From what we have heard they will be going to Microsoft to publish their games) Epic Mistwalker Ninjabee (Arcade games) |

Long Live SHIO!
