Iwata directly addresses Sony’s ‘Wii owns the closet’ statement

April 30th, 2009

Remember when Sony said that the Wii owns the closet? I certainly remember that, and so does someone else…Satoru Iwata.

In his video posted today, Mr. Iwata was explaining the ideas behind the ‘Wii no ma’ video service. Within that video, Mr. Iwata directly addresses the claims from Sony, but does so without actually mentioning the rival.

“According to our internal research, 87% of Wii consoles are connected to the largest TV screen in the household, which is set in the centre of the living room. …our consoles are not only out of the closet, they are also in the middle of the house. This shows what kind of our customers are playing Wii, as of January this year. As you can see, Wii is played by people in a wide range of ages, and male-female ratio is nearly equal. As I have mentioned, Wii has spread with nearly equal male-to-female ratio and is played by people of broad range of ages. Nearly 90% of the consoles are connected to the largest TV screen of the household in the living room. As for consoles which are already connected to the internet, video streaming or payment system has established through our videogame businesses.” - Satoru Iwata

Wow, I am really shocked to see Nintendo directly going after that statement and shooting it down. Pretty ballsy of you, Mr. Iwata!

Please make sure to check out the full article, which contains a complete translation of what Iwata says in his video feature. That full translation, word for word, can be found here

Thats saying it to their face Mr Iwata........but in a professional way.

Is that the actual full comment? Because why does he have to repeat the entire comment twice, but backwards?

i love how classy they are, you know Microsoft or sony responding to a barb like that would have been ass

nintendo simple says, false while leaving out the culprit

thats class

I like how he addressed it without actually saying he was addressing it.

Sneaky sneaky!

Do you see the ellipses (...)?  That means part of the comment was taken out.

While I agree that closet statement was stupid, Of all my friends who own Wii's, they also own a 360 or ps3, and all the consoles are connected to the biggest tv in the middle of the house :/

I'm not shocked they addressed it. They addressed it with pure facts, which is what they should have done. No name calling was done, and they didn't insult the other system. They also showed why their streaming service could actually be a profitable venture, which is what they were really addressing.

Had they thrown in a "our internal research shows that only 60% of PS3's are attached to the largest TV", then it would have been really "ballsy"

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Good response.

So wait, Iwata just called the Wii gay?  Unexpected turn of events!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
