Also is this some sort of natural progression between published games with him in? he starts out as a transvestite and slowly makes his way to becoming a women.

The question here is what does he become after a women?

 Does Yoshi ever lay eggs? He may just have stolen some random eggs from someone he hate, put dynamite in them and throw them away.

Can Birdo's species change gender at will?

Birdo IS a sexy woman. However, Peach trounces every other female in the beauty department.

It was Miyamoto, and it clearly states in the US Mario Bros 2 manual that he is a Guy who thinks he is a girl and would rather be called Birdetta. Even though the gender has "changed" in the US (I still claim it has always been a guy, just dressed up as a girl and falsely called a girl in the manuals) he has always been male in Japan.

EDIT: I also think this is called out in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I'd have to boot up the game to double check.
