Forums - Sony - Does Sony overuse their franchises?

I was going to say something to defend Sony but alas it seems like the fanboys have already turned this thread into an unreasonable pile of mess.

Pat yourself on the back fanboys!

Nintendo overuse Mario way too much... but franchises...

That goes to Nintendo too, imo.

How so?

I think a lot of people still take the branch out games as the main franchise. Super Smash Brothers was a new franchise, and so was Mario Kart, or Mario baseball or Mario Striker. We don't receive more than one of those games each generation. I would agree Mario is overused since he is everywhere but I don't think Nintendo overuse any franchise other than Mario Party.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I still don't think it's any better or any worse than MS or Nintendo.

wow really?!

Only 4 Halo games since 2002

1 Fable per generation so far

Rare bring out a game every year but its different than the previous, Viva Pinata could be the exception.

yes mainly buzz, new ps3 IPs and singstar games - there's like 40 ps2 singstar games and by the end of 2009 ps3 will have 6 singstar games(i don't even know how many buzz games were already released. same was with eye toy on ps2. sony would make a good thing by releasing their games from certain franchises every 3 years and not almost every year - make it as a big DLC partly free. people would appreciate that more then making 5 games from the sam series for 1 platform.

to people saying that nintendo is overusing their own franchises: i would like to hear how?
we are usually getting 1 game from few classic nintendo IP per platform/generation so it's like every 4-5 years - it's hard to call it overuse.

No, you're right. But certain characters are overused in Nintendo games. For instance: Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super paper mario, Mario RPG, Mario strikers. All these games are spun from the orginal Mario IP and I haven't even mentioned Smash Bros. or Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. You can't blame them as Mario is easily recognisable and a Nintendo mascot.

However, I do feel they are overusing certain characters... can you guess which one yet? :P

So I hear everyone clamoring over God of War 3 coming out this year. Thats cool I guess...except its the 4th freaking GoW game in 5 years. But it seems sony likes to spam their successful franchises.

Ratchet and Clanks come out every year, sometimes twice

Patapon 2 is coming out...and Patapon is hardly a year old.

Jak and Daxter, Resistance, Wipeout, Motostorm, etc

They must have sequelitis or something.

Do you feel their franchises are overused? -DISCUSS-

No, I don't. The only exception being Ratchet & Clank (and I didn't even play the PS2 ones ), which I think is excessive.

The reason for this, is because Sony bring out so many new IPs, that they always seem to have new franchises to use and expand on. And many of the new games in a franchise is a sequel in terms of story as well, which makes new games easier to accept. God of War III is the finale to Kratos' mission, and I would want a sequel like that as fast as can reasonably be expected. And I believe Jaffe said that GoW3 would be the last GoW game, and I just hope Sony stay true to that. Please don't milk it ;_;

Not at all. Especially being that they have tons of new ips! They spread it around pretty equally!

Well, my take, not really. I mean sure, we see plenty of Ratchets and now the finale of God of War is on it's way, but look at the amount of new IPs currently out, and in development. Sony has done an absolute great job at developing new IPs this gen, so their line-up isn't all overused.

For people jumping on Nintendo, even if you don't like these franchises: Wii Play, Wii Sports and Wii Fit are ALL new IPs and were ALL well received, let's remember that

actually none of those games have been critically well received. They sold well but are not considered critically acclaimed games at all. Their reception has been warm to mediocre at best.

I'm pretty he was talking about the consumer reception and not the reception of 30 year old manchildren.

Yes especially Ratchet. We will have 5 in just two years: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, Quest for Booty, and Crack in Time.
