Forums - Gaming - Do sales mean QUALITY GAMES

i have noticed many people on this site saying " oh this game sucks because it didnt even sale 1 million copies"

do sales really matter, i was reading the Infamous thread about sales and rating, people were saying the game would be crap because of the sales

that does not even make since

Not in the slightest.

Not at all.

Take my love, take my land..

Most people will say that no sales do not determine the quality of the game in the slightest, but they are wrong.

Its not to say that a good game won't be overlooked every once in a while and not get good sales but contrary to popular belief people aren't that stupid, they play games that are fun and don't like to waste their money - so if a game gets good sales its a fair bet the game is atleast somewhat enjoyable.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

Is quality not something which has to do with personal taste?

I believe in this so I would have to say no!

Obviously not.

This is true, good sales is probably a fair indicator that the game is not broken and is fairly enjoyable.  But sales are not a direct determinant of quality.  The fact that MK wii has sold orders of magnitude more than GRID or Wipeout HD does not serve as proof that the game is of greater quality.

...

If not sales, than what determines quality? Your personal opinion?

More like the general opinion of everyone, somehow reflected by sales.

If I say that "Big Rigs Over The Road Racing" has very high quality, is it a justified opinion just because I think so? No! Of course this would be nonsense, and you could say that I have a very bad taste in games. Why? Because EVERYONE ELSE on the planet, who knows anything about it, would agree that it SUCKS! This is why it had bad sales, probably only a few parents and kids bought it, randomly.

Of course sales=/=quality that directly, there are other things that effect the sales, like advertisements, the genre's overall niche-ness, and the franchise name, but generally, if a game sells better than another game with a similar background, it is because more people like it, a.k.a. it is better.
