Forums - Sales - Interesting year to date YoY Japanese hardware sales, PS360 up Wii down

Wii: -63.7%
DSL+DSi: -2.9%
PS2: -52.8%
PS3: +19.9%
PSP: -40.1%
X360: +237.5%

Home hardware: -36.8%
Portable hardware: -23.3%
Sum of all hardware: -28.9%

YoY=Year over year btw for newbies. Meaning sales compared to the same time last year.

The above numbers are for the first 15 weeks of the year and using media create numbers.

Puts a lot in perspective for me. All hardware is down except the two hardcore formats, PS3 and 360. And 360 is up by far the hugest. 360 still may have weak weekly sales in raw numbers, but if they can keep anywhere close to this rate of improvement up next year they will be a player. It's amazing to think back that Xbox 1 consistently sold in the 100's in Japan.

Also ytd: PS3=447,700, Wii=431,833

Good to see the PS3 YOY being up in one of the 3 regions at least!

All the console needs in the other regions is the price-cut that everyone is anticipating since the quality hardware and software is there, it is just the price that is holding back the mass market from getting the console!

The PS3 and 360 have had a number of big games so yeah.

Hopefully the PS3 and the 360 hold up well respectively

Wow. Look at 360s number. No big releases this year except Star Ocean 4.

New software is needed to drive hardware sales in Japan right now.

JRPGs = WIN for 360

That percentage is a little misleading.  As noted in the OP it is so large because the 360 numbers were so small.

I think it's very interesting that both the HD consoles are showing growth - but it's the PS3 growth that seems more sustainable to me.

360 has grown from nothing to weak numbers, which is an achievement in itself, but required enormous effort in terms of exclusive titles for what in the big scheme of things is a small jump in true numerical units.  I really doubt it can continue to see incremental jumps (which is what it needs) as the weekly sales are already below 10K a week despite the large number or JRGPs on the platform.

PS3 on the other hand, due to local preferences, is seeing a much bigger jump with each exclusive title and clearly gets the biggest jump from popular titles like RE5.

Still, looks like Japan is going HD from those YoY - and MS is definately gone from dead in the water to toehold.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

But the PS3's YOY % isn't sustainable, it got a big boost due to FF demo, in a couple of weeks it will be back down to making a YOY loss whilst the 360 will still be up YOY.
