Forums - Nintendo - Solid Wii Tech Specs Anyone?

Once again I'll point out some simple things anyone can see just by looking at the cpu... look at it here:

http://pics.computerbase.de/lexikon/68040/180px-Broadwaycpu.JPG

It clearly has 72914 written on it. The Wii cpu speed is 729.14mhz

Further down it lists the voltage as 1.266

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Nintendo announced prior to Wii release that they would not reveal the official specs of the Wii to the public since the only thing the public uses them for it to compare and draw false conclusions regarding data they don't understand.

The GC tech specs were officially released well before the system launched.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Actually we don't know nothing about clock speeds or anything, the 729.14Mhz could be... but maybe it isn't. GPU architecture... we don't know either. Being a 90nm process could easily throw in something like a Radeon9800, but we don't know either.

The only thing known is the VRAM, being 64MB GDDR3 on a 128bit bus... you can actually know this by only looking at the numbers on the memory cell. But the speed... we don't know either.

"IBM claims the 750GX GPU is based on the 750FX processor designed by the company several years ago. The chip can run at frequencies up to 1.1GHz and includes a 4-way set-associative single core with 1MB L2 cache."

So one version of the chip can run up to 1.1GHz, that doesn't say anything about what speed the version in the Wii is running at. It can be downclocked for heat reasons etc.

Exactly. An actual console example would be the PSP. Up until the recent firmware update it only ran at 222mhz, yet the chip could do 333mhz.

It could also be the case with the Wii and a future firmware update could boost the speed (unlikely, but it could happen).

underclocking is done mostly for power savings, it is also done for pricing (yields or development costs) but in the last case it is mostly not mentionned on the package

i think the official nintendo website did mention it

Well 64MB VRAM isn't too shabby (I suppose it's Video-RAM). But in general it doesn't say anything at all. It's not about capacity or speed, it's about architecture; if it supports DirectX9c (doubt it),etc.

And I don't think anything less than Geforce 6000 or Radeon X000 could render Mario Galaxy and Brawl.

Any questions?

Way to participate in an intelligent, discussion *thumbs up* [/sarcasm]

Back on topic, I found the information I was looking for. Apparently the Wii uses an advanced version of the Wii 'Shaders,' a different architecture than the DX Shaders, which allow for multiple color ops in a single render pass (16 pipes, I believe it said), nothing on Vertex-shading functionality.
