that's not entirely true. Someone could own a vcr and not know how to record.

Cause the average person doesnt know how to download HD movies, or any movie for that matter. Or they dont care to. By your logic a lot of things arent necessary. Shoot, video games arent really necessary but we all buy them. |
i love your logic, i mention how download movies are easy so why get a blu ray, and you change it to why do we need videogames?
maybe where you are it is difficult, but here in toronto everyones cable box can download any movies with the click of a button, and they tack the charge on your cable bill. very easy bonehead level interface that my grandmother can use.
it may be tougher where you are, but like i said, here its easy and widespread and advertised on tv all the time. has to cut into blu ray.
Sony didn't want to be first, to begin with.
They wanted to get a slow start, get a small userbase, and then cut costs and reduce the price. There are a few things, however, that they did not foresee:
1) The Wii was popular
2) Microsoft was WAY richer than them
3) The financial crisis.

Who knows, maybe heads rolled because they were expecting a slower start and then that first bill for cost came in and they were like "wtf? Why aren't we selling less? the console is ***** 600$!"
jk

Of course the the PS3 was used as a "Trojan Horse" for Blu Ray. I've been saying this the whole time. Sony thought they would at least be in second. Microsoft really surprised them. Sony thought they could screw over the market and get into second place, but the people didn't listen.

i can picture the board meeting a few months in:
exec "the bundle is doing well actually, people love back compatibility!'
boss "fuck you. number 1, youre fired. number 2, who here can get rid of back compatibility . . . wait my phones ringing"
client "can i double my ps3 order?"
boss "fuck you!"

Sony didn't learn anything. Sony walked into this gen knewing exactly what they were going to do and that they wouldn't be in first. However, they didn't know the Wii would sell as well as it was and that Microsoft had it out for them as bad as they did.
