No way they would hype up their chip at a media event...

In other news, the guy behind the Phantom swears that its going to wipe the Wii across the floor when it comes out in three weeks. Since he says it, it just has to be true. No chance he has any bias. No sir.

off topic ..... i miss power pc in my macs... a cell with alvitec the apple optimized final cut pro for, with say 8 gig of ram… a man can dream

or even just a 2 quad core g6* chips running at 2.8 ghz, with 8 gig or ram or more with alvitec

The problem is that PPC was absolutely killing their laptop line. I personally couldn't be happier that they switched, though I understand why you video guys might be frustrated (I'm a designer).

I think IBM was more interested in the many developers being at the event. There were also demonstrations by operating system developers and demoscene coders. There were BoF / Amiga Developers Pavillion rooms to discuss software development.

hah i do design and video, and yes your right, though if you remember freescale (aka motorla), had a g4 lowpower low tep option runing dual core at 2.1 ghz, it ran circles around the dual 2 theorticaly

The numbers do not need to be changed, the ps3 was undertaracked before, and its been overtrakced now so it is at 4.60m

A link to prove that Xenon uses non-arithmetic calculations on the 115 GFLOPS figure would be nice.

I find it funny you put Microsoft PR above IBM expertise regarding their own CPUs. Regarding the quote, you can ask the guy yourself at PS3Coderz.com, he runs the place. He wrote some excellent technical articles in the past, IMO well worth reading.

This is starting to get funny :)

The console with the most GigaFlops turns out to be the Giantic Flop...

Anyway, in games you have a kind of timevariant behaviour. You cannot calculate events in the future because you have an external input from the gamer.
So even if you would have a supercomputer with multiple teraflops it still isn't sure you'll have the most beautifull games.
And that's the real problem, the Cell is made for supercomputer task (proteine folding anyone), that doesn't mean it's great for games...

The SPEs are mostly responsible for the flop performance, so the PPE is not going to make up for the disabled SPE and the one

Yes, mostly but the peak performance of the PPE + VMX equals one SPE. The theoretical peak performance of the Cell minus one SPE is 218 GFLops.

Flop performance is by no means the be all end all of CPU benchmarking

It's just one of the more objective benchmarks available.

The Cell in the PS3 is down 2 SPEs. One is dedicated to the OS and one is disabled to increase yields.  That is setting aside the fact that another can be pulled away at anytime by the OS as it has priority. I am still trying to figure out where you found out that the Cell was benchmarked without its PPE core. Even if it was its still doens't have a theoretical peak performance of 218GFLops. Why did you even do this thread if you weren't go to do it fairly and in depth? You glossed over any flaws in the PS3 design. Ignored any advantages the 360 has over the PS3. We know you like your PS3 but you don't help your personal standing by posting FUD.

Comparing the data, then the XBox 360 was a gigantic Flop last year as well. Honestly we are so early in this generation, the most anticipated PS3 games haven't even been released yet. The PS2 won last year and chirstmas with convincing numbers and is still doing well. If you put the PS2 and PS3 global sales figures together Sony is still performing very well within the market of home consoles (the overall market seems to be expanding compared to last year).
