I think people forget that the original Halo came out in 2001. It was far more advanced than every game before it even most FPS games years after. It was a huge hit as well so I'm sure it inspired many games.

I beg to differ, Halo didn't advance much the formula that was already perfected by Half-Life, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, released two years prior to Halo. Halo revolutionised the FPS genre on the consoles indeed, but computer FPS have done the same things or even better than Halo did at the time.

the speed and passing were far different then in the games you reference. and its controls for the console were close to revolutionary. the AI for the time was unexpected and fantastic. and outside of half life the store was hands and feet above the standard of the genre.    you are right most of the things were done, but not at the same time, and not with the balance and polish. you have to compare halo though more to other console offerings at the time then PC offerings (though it fairs well there too) and for the console it was a graphical tour de force that made it clear the next gen in gaming was here ..... it is the equivalent for many gamers of FF on the PS1

Halo introduced all kinds of things to the FPS world that other games take directly from.

Alright lets get some facts straight:

Halo revolutionized the regenerative health (no more hunting for health packs ala Quake, Doom, etc...)

Halo's matchmaking service is the best their is for games of this type (at least on consoles) Alot of games have tried copying their matchmaking (including Gears 2) and fail miserably.

Halo is still one of the only online multiplayer games where vehicles are actually balanced.

It revolutionized hot buttons for grenades as well as the hot button for the melee attack.

They also made it so you can only carry two primary weapons instead of every weapon on the map.

All in all if it weren't for Halo console FPS's would not be any where near what they are today.

So yes Halo is responsible for alot of games. And I mean ALOT.

You never played video games in the PC/16 bit console/arcade era did you?

Because *spolier*  A lot you mentioned happened before Halo existed.

Listen I enjoyed playing the Halo series, I think there good games and do what they need to do well, but lets not ignore common sense.  There were simply other games or FPS's that came out and did what Halo did before it, doesn't make Halo bad, Halo did a good thing from learning from other games and implementing these features well.

But honestly a title of ""Is Halo responsibile for many good games today?""  Oh course not.

I'm not saying Halo changed the way games are done completely. But it definitely had a huge impact on the way FPS games were done from then on.

Maybe the title should be ""Halo's impact on the FPS genre."" or ""Halos influence on the FPS genre.""

See those titles are boring and proberly get you less replys, but were all clear on the topic at hand.

Well perhaps you should have also read the original post of the thread.

"Is Halo is responsable for most of the good FPS games today ?"

That might have saved you some pointless ranting.

With Halo, console FPS games became popular. And regenerating health was added. Nothing much. But we wouldn't have seen CoD4 or Killzone 2 without Halo.

Controversial thread titles generates more responses. If this thread related to FPS or shooter games only it would not have received as much attention.

Halo lifted the bar higher and new games have improved upon it by seeing it as a benchmark. Halo:CE had great graphics back in its day and it had brilliant controls and gameplay.

halo had zero to no effect on the industry. Half-Life will always be one of the biggest influences in the FPS genre.

I agree to a degree on Killzone 2, but not CoD4.  At most IW would have used Halo as a template of what you could achieve with FPS on console, but they are one of the leading lights of FPS and arguably the masters currently of both PC/console based FPS titles with Valve concentrating on PC still although creeping onto consoles and 360 in particular and Bungie much more console centric.

I really doubt we wouldn't have got CoD4 without Halo.

Also, for the record, while I always assume most topics on this site are about consoles by default, when we're talking genres then I see that including PC if relevant - and in the case of the FPS genre PC couldn't be more relevant.

Therefore while no doubt many posting here only really know FPS through console doesn't mean a topic such as this about the genre should focus only on console.

The OP was Halo responsible for many good games today?  I believe, not as an opinion, but more quantatatively based on the roots of the genre the answer is no - or no more than the many other multi-million selling FPS titles (and remember titles like Half Life on PC sell just as much and have had arguably more influence on the genre, influincing Halo rather than the other way around).

If the question was, would there by a 360 without Halo?  Or the success of FPS on console without Halo?  Then the answer would be yes.

I feel some posters are confusing the two as they see FPS as console centric or only really know the genre based on consoles.

So Halo has had huge impact, but more on the success of the genre on a specific platform (consoles) rather than directly influincing the latest games in that genre - i.e. almost all FPS including Halo are based on mechanics established prior to Halo on PC, however thanks to Halo many more titles are now made and released on consoles.

In other words Halo has had more influence on the industry than on its own specific genre (in terms of gameplay mechanics).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

maybe for just the FPS only not gaming in general
