AHEM. What I meant to say was....


Current Wii sales in Japan: 7.99 million
Current PS3 sales in Japan: 3.08 million
Current Wii over PS3 gap in Japan: 4.91 million

This last week's (week of April 11th, 2009) PS3 over Wii gap in Japan: 0.000683 million

How many weeks will it take for PS3 to pass the Wii in Japan if they both sell at exactly this last week's rate forever?

7,188.87262 weeks

That's 138.24755 years.

On that day, I shall NOT bump this thread.

Everyone should wait til next week. This week and next week will fall somewhere in this range:

April 19/April 26

Wii - 11k/25k to 17k/38k

PS3 - 28k/20k to 40k/30k

I'd go 13k and 27k for Wii and 33k and 25k for PS3 but it depends on how receptive the Japanese gamers are to the demos for the future releases (FFXIII/MH3) since neither system is actually getting a "fully new game" either week.

The PS3 FFXIII demo/bundle in particular is a bit of a mystery because it looks like it did well but the software sales suggest hardware sales may be less than I anticipated. We'll just have to see.

If SE waits until then to decide to make KH3 on PS3, it would be too late for releasing it in 2011...

On the flipside - it is concievable PS3 could continue to compete well against Wii with week by week sales leadership flipping back and forth but for PS3 to ever overtake the Wii's lead completely the Wii would have to completely die out.

Not exactly a lot when you mention 3 titles and the one that is truly big won't even release in 2010.

A lot could also depend on whether GT5 drops in 2009 in Japan too.
That would definately help the PS3

Monster Hunter 3 will turn the momentum back in the Wii's favour, at least temporarily.

I don't think, unless the PS3 starts to sell at DS-level, the PS3 will ever catch up to the Wii in Japan.

And it's not all about JRPGs in Japan, as shown by the fact that both Resident Evil 5 and Yakuza 3 outsold every single console JRPG this gen, on opening week in Japan. It's just that the 360 doesn't have many (quality) titles that appeal to a Japanese audience. GTA is quite popular in Japan, but like Resident Evil it's associated with Sony. It is, of course, partly because Sony is Japanese, but it's partly because the only Japan-centric exclusives on the 360 are second rate Square Enix JRPGs and Tales of Vesperia.
