Forums - Nintendo - Yahoo: Troubled times for the Wii

Must be Wii bashing time again. Its been a few days since the media had a good bash...

Fixed.

Chin up, though: I get the feeling that it'll be the PS3's turn again over the Summer, with the 360 following in Fall. Then we'll get to do this all over again!

"And if Japan is any indication (and it usually is), that gap can disappear in a heartbeat."

ROFL! That HAS to be quote of the month :)

PS3 outsells the Wii by ... 4-6k, for a few weeks - and its going to close a gap of FIVE MILLION SALES?

At current sales, its only going to take the PS3 around 4-5 years to catch the Wii - assuming it doesn't sell any more units!

8 million wii consoles in Japan. 127 million people... 32 million households... 1 in 4 households...(edit: at full price in less than three years.)

Yup Wii is doomed.

Actually, Japan really needs a price cut or a bundle.

edit2: yup, PS3 is catching up all right. http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS3&reg2=Japan&cons3=X360&reg3=------&weeks=140

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

In fairness, the Wii is underperforming in Japan, as Iwata will tell you. This "sky is falling" nonsense that so many are eagerly seizing is silly, of course, but the Wii has plenty of room for growth in Japan, if Nintendo (and sadly, it will have to be Nintendo) can find a way to trigger it. Iwata's shown tremendous confidence, even cockiness, recently, so they definitely think they have an ace in their hand, but then they recently misjudged the impact of Animal Crossing and Wii Music, so there is some space for doubt.

Personally though, I wouldn't bet against Iwata on this one.

I say it "needs a price cut" but it doesn't really because they need to do a world wide simultaneous price cut. If you look at the world sales, it's not worth it yet.

Oh my god. Will they EVER STOP PREDICTING THE WII "FAD" TO BE OVER???

Seriously, it's not even funny any more. YoY sales are up. Somebody should point that out to these morons.

Achievement is its own reward, pride only obscures.

HATING OPHELIA- Coming soon from Markosia Comics!

True, a price cut could help attract more customers, but as someone who already owns a Wii I'm much more enthused that Nintendo's deciding to pursue the "more killer-apps" approach instead.

Moreover, I think that's a wiser decision from a business standpoint: consumers are less likely to wait for the "inevitable" price drop if you show them that you're not going to drop the price anytime soon. For example, I know many people don't get Sega or Ubisoft titles in particular on the first day, because they're often discounted by the second month.

Plus, a killer app not only attracts new customers, it provides additional incentive for current owners to pay you again, and to not stray from your console. A price cut does nothing for an owner who bought the console months ago and is beginning to tire of his current games; a new game will add more fuel to that fire. Considering that many Wii owners in particular are new to gaming, I think it's wise to make sure that THEY stay in the game (and consequently continue to act as your missionaries for their friends).

Haha, Yahoo know a thing or two about troubled times.

I think this one story might get them more hits than their entire search and email business put together :D

They're still the most visited websites in world.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Bundles please. How about :
- WiiFit (Wii + WiiFit + discount)
- WiiSports (Wii + WiiSports + 2nd controller)
- WiiRacing (Wii + MK + 2nd controller)
- WiiHunter (Wii + MH)

I also think a lot of this is because, for the first time in almost 10 years - there was NO MarioParty title released last year in Japan. Its a annual best-seller, and I'm a little surprised we haven't seen one yet.

So if you combine:
- Mario Party
- Mario/Sonic Winter Olympics
- Monster Hunter/MH3
- FF:CB
- WiiSports:Resort
- WiiFit+
- Xmas title (Mario, Nintendogs, Zelda)

...with some existing bundles...

I'm sure the Wii will "survive" this year in Japan.
