Forums - Sales - Nintendo thinks Wii is failing in Japan!

During a pressconference in Japan, Satoru Iwata spoke about the Wii situation in Japan. He said that Wii is in an unhealthy state and havent been this poor since its release in Japan. And that he's not satisfied with the current state of the Wii in Japan.

This announcement was made due to Sonys recent success in Japan wher the Playstation 3 has had better sales throughout some time.

Link?

Anyway, Wii sales aint bad... 360 sales are bad.
Plus, what does he expect? Lack of games means people wont be as interested. Wii needs games, fast.

I doubt he thinks it's failing though. Thinking it is in an unhealthy state and that it is failing is two totally different things by the way. Quite a stretch there.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know there is something wrong with Wii in Japan right now and Nintendo recognizes that which is good. At least, luckily, for Nintendo no one has really taken advantage of their "unhealthy state" as they are all having the same issues it seems.

Read this story on another website about 2 days ago. This has nothing to do with the PS3, he was discussing the overall weak market of Japan.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

"After the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii in Japan last month, the Wall Street Journal called Nintendo "vulnerable" in its home country. Now, after initially blaming a weak Japanese gaming market for the Wii's 63 percent one-month sales slump, Iwata admitted that the console was facing difficulties."

.. and goes on to blame the Japanese character, who get tired of new entertainment faster than the neighbours in the west.

The real question is how the hell is the Wii selling so well in Japan right now? The closest thing the Wii has seen to a big game was Animal Crossing during Christmas season and the system is still almost entirely devoid of traditional Japanese centered games. How many RPG's does the Wii even have? Looking at VG's game database, the RPG spread looks like this

And there's Fire Emblem at 170 thousand (was listed as a strategy game). So 10 games, DQ is a rail slasher, Pokemon is a DS game companion piece,  FFCC:ET is a direct DS port. That leaves 7 Wii RPG's which include the likes of kid centered Opoona.

barely any of these games would be expected to sell well on an RPG gamers console of choice, let alone cause an RPG gamer to want the system.  The fact that the Wii is still selling at these numbers despite not having seen a decent selling title since joysound karaoke and taiko drum master, and barely having a single RPG is astounding (oh yeah and no price drop).

Just imagine what this thing will do once Motion Plus, Monster Hunter, Crystal Chronicles, Tales of Gracia, Dragon Quest, and all those Nintendo announced Japanese games.

I know this sounds just like a PS3 defence thread, but the difference is that the Wii in Japan is selling at the same level as the PS3. The PS3 has just seen lots of major games release. The Wii is selling those same numbers based on... absolutely nothing.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I would hope that everyone understands what Nintendo's weakness is. Yes the Japanese are quicker to respond to a lackluster underpowered system. With the money Nintendo has been making and the time the system has been out, most "hard-core gamers" would have thought Nintendo would have already come out with more AAA non-gimmick games. since it seems like Nintendo's catering to non-mainstream gamers, I can see the Japanese getting bored with the same games with different names. When Nintendo came out with the Wii they based it on the success of the DS. The difference being the DS was for creative programming where as the Wii Is just under powered making it hard for programmers to be creative in a gaming sense and rely mainly on the controller.

The PS3 run is close to ending in Japan. Both systems will be around 18k this week (4/11), PS3 will jump to 30k-40k on the FFXIII bundle next week while Wii will be up or flat on Deca Sports 2 (4/18). PS3 will fall the following week (4/25), probably to 25k, and Wii should rise above 30k on MHG bundled with the MH3 Demo. That should be enough to jettison Wii ahead of PS3 through Golden Week into at least the end of the May unless something huge is announced very soon for the PS3. June should go to Wii on Wii Sports Resort alone.
