it depends on the map, there is another map that's 6-10, so there is probably one for 16, I think it might have something to do with the size of the maps.
edit: now that I look at it again, those are just recommanded numbers o_O meh, 12 is fine.

New info via Gonintendo:
- online headcount was brought down from 16 players to 12 in order to keep things running smoothly
- Free for All mode: players frag each other until a predetermined frag count is met
- Marathon mode: get as many kills as you can in a certain time limit
- Three Strikes: play a match with only 3 lives to spare
- Last Man Standing: be the last man standing
- ASE Football: the player that holds onto the ASE the longest wins
- Bounty Hunter: take out specific targets, lose points for taking out wrong targets
- Team Reaper: play Quick Match and Marathon with sides
- Shared Stock: teammates share lives from a team pool
- Team Objective: capture the flag style, but with the ASE replacing a flag
- Team Objective 2: one ASE in a level, grab it and bring it back to your base to score
- WiiSpeak supported, but you’ll only hear the players that are actually standing close to you in the game
- at peak WiiSpeak saturation, you’ll hear the 6 closest players

If it's graphics, this is meant to be an effects showcase, not a texture showcase.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs
@Puffy: Regarding WiiSpeak, I wonder what that means for lobbies/ I daresay I hope everyone will get to chat with one another.
The in-game thing is just like what they have in Halo, where you can only hear the guys closest to you, just lke in real life. You shouldn't be able to hear what the guy halway across the map is planning.

WICKED!!!
Remember months ago how they wanted people to email suggestions to help improve the game?
Well those were the suggestions that I made about the ASE. I wonder if this was already planed or something they listend to from me.
I seem to remember some stupid rumor that there was only one possible gametype per map--like Deathmatch would be for Map A, team Deathmatch for map B, etc... glad this video proved it wrong.

In modern combat, I'm pretty sure soldiers have battlefield-wide radio communications.
A limitation to proximity-voice-chat-only can be fun in particular scenarios, though, as in the enemy team activating a radio scrambler apparatus... Or holding onto the ASE could grant your squad points, but at the same time interfere with your communications, etc.
Great... circular shadows. We are ten years ago, now. Very nice, High Voltage...

That's definitely not the point. High Voltage stated they wanted to achieve the peak in Wii graphics, and it ends as a "more than average" graphical title. I never doubt they would have problems with other than graphics technical issues, such as Wii Speak and online. But graphically, it looks awful. It simply follows the standard I hate in HD systems: high amount of effects, crappy/non-existing artistic direction. And now in multiplayer, not even that.
But answering your question... yes, I'll notice, even more when players' movements are as artificial as it gets.
