Forums - Gaming - Sony: Microsoft “writes cheques” for games thanks to first-party line-up insecurity

Mom: Your dad is insecure about himself, so he buys your love with toys and gifts. I don't do that. I make my gifts. I've been knitting you a sweater.

Dad: (walks in) Hey, sport! I just bought you a sweater!!

Me: Awesome!! I'm getting a sweater!!

I really get excited over sweaters.

Well they would know. If anyone has written more checks for games it was Sony during the PS1 era.

Damn. We'd gone a good two months without a Sony-Microsoft PR war. What next, "at least we can afford to" from Microsoft? This can't end well.

I'm noticing that Sony usually starts these fights, but then Microsoft starts playing dirty, and Sony does the same, until they both get bored and give up.

You have been mis-remembering.  Let me refresh your memory.

Sony mentions they will be doing naive 1080p gaming and HDMI.  MS says Sony is lying cause 1080p gaming is impossible this gen.  Hell, a $3.2 billion viral marketing campaign buys a LOT of negative press.  That's starting a bunch of "these fights"...about 2 years worth I'd say.

Hold the phone! First-party studios are an asset?? Somebody call Nintendo!

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

Just different business models. One is developing the games on his own (Sony) the other one is hiring independent developers to do that. (MS)

Both have their pros and cons.

I thought it was common knowledge that Sony doesn't pay for exclusivity for games, they might take over as publisher and fund the projects but never go straight out and just write a cheque.

That's something that Microsoft does too (outside of the console division), and gets slated for it.

And how does Sony take over these publishers? By paying magic beans?

The "best exclusive games of 2008" award says you're wrong.  The current 2009 exclusive games list says you'll probably be wrong again.
