Forums - Sales - Will any current gen console beat PS2 in terms of million sellers?

The thread where the OP was being sarcastic caused me to look up the number of million sellers the PS2 has. According to this website the PS2 has 206 million sellers however it simply had to be noted that software data for PS2 games are incomplete for many games. From the top of my head SOTC has 0.73 as US only sales but no Japan or EU sales, that game is a guaranteed million seller if the US sales are correct.

For reference, the number of million sellers each current gen console has are:

DS - 72

PSP - 26

360 - 62

Wii - 48

PS3 - 29

Personally I just do not see it happening, the PS2 in its time got so many exclusives it meant sales were not spread due to the game being multi-plat. I do however see the Wii and DS having more 10 million sellers by far (I think it has already been beaten in that area) compared by the PS2, when the games from those consoles sell they sellllllll.

It'll be hard to beat. But the DS could come close.

Looking at the numbers now the DS will not come anywhere near PS2, I doubt the console has another 3-4 years left in it. Wii should be the ones which comes the closest since it has 48 so quickly.

Quick answer: No.

Long answer: Hell no.

Not a chance in hell simply cause no platform will be anywhere as dominant as the PS2 was and developers see PS360 as one platform (and some outright hate Nintendo) so Wii will never get the big games that PS2 was getting.

Wii is the only one with a chance, and then only if it eventually crushes PS2's install base, considering how much more the top games on Wii sell compared to PS2.

But if Wii does get a 180m install base or whatever it would take, even then I don't think we'll ever know for sure, because as was said, the PS2 list is probably extremely incomplete.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

More than likely not. It would take a lot of time for the console to be at a high amount of sales with ample game releases like the PS2 had and I just don't know if the generation will last that long for any of the 3 consoles. As for DS and PSP, software is always a lot less on handhelds. Generally it doesn't have near the amount of attach rates as consoles for obvious reasons. Thus it would be very difficult for either to get there.

The only one that can come close is the wii, but i don't think so

Impossible for the Wii, but the DS could come quite close.

Nope, the only one that will come close is the DS but it won't surpass the PS2's million sellers.

The DS has already been out for 5 years, if it stays out for another 5 years (10 years on the market), it'll have have around 150 million sellers, it'll have to be out for atlease 15 years to have over 200 million sellers.
