I consider likable to be pretty high praise for a JRPG protagonist. Most of them fall into the category of mute, drama queen, or shallow caricature. Some of them even go for the hat trick. There aren't many I can actually empathize with.

I concur.

Then again, Fire Emblem isn't a jRPG.  It falls into the even more niche sRPG category and sRPGs generally crush jRPGs into the ground when it comes to character design and development.

Nah, I see lots of offenders in SRPGs, too. Even in Fire Emblem games. Guess I just have high standards.

Well, most Fire Emblem characters are "one sided" and thus shallow as hell. But when you have 40 characters, it's kinda hard to have them switch sides and such. Seth being the exception when he kills Eirika in that glitch though.

Anyone specificly dull (of the main characters)?

You just wanna make me piss some people off, don't you? What the heck...

Yeah, obviously not everybody can have a ton of depth to them when there are dozens of characters, and supporting characters often have to fill a particular role which doesn't leave them a lot of room for personality. I can forgive a predictable bigot character like Jill or a joke character like Ilyana.

I'm a little reluctant to finger particular characters, just because I haven't played these games as exhaustively as some. There are a lot of support conversations I've never seen. Eliwood and Eirika would be my picks for least interesting main characters so far.

I do indeed enjoy seeing flying rats own the hell out of Link(s) indeed.

I agree with Eliwood, but it's been a while since I played FE7 (well, it's just a year, but I've played so many FEs it kinda messes up in my head).

Eirika though, seems like a somewhat balanced character (and I played Sacred Stones less than 1 hour ago). She's essentially a more realistic Fire Emblem character, as she seems somewhat intellectual, and has a number of great lines.

Ephraim on the other hand, seems more like a "I wanna go hit things" character.

I really liked Jaffar and Nino too. FE7 has some excellent writing, and that's one of the downsides by 8 (it's still awesome though). 9 has the best, and 10 is back on FE7 levels.

man Ilyana is cool and all but rolf beats all, in the GC one I had a 25% chance for deadeye without the killer bow, but with the killer bow, hehehehehohoho

Yeah Rolf is insane. In RD he killed everything and usually in one shot. Total monster.

My favorites are still Volke, really sad that he played such a small role in RD and Haar, also a total killing machine, except in the Endgame of RD. Damn those mages.

I'm in the endgame of PoR and am messing kids up.

Cainegis, Tibarn, Naesala, Nailah, Ike and Zihark are an unstoppable object

(Zihark has Vantage, Adept, the attack where you get 5 strikes and 35% critc chance. Even on the enemies turn he usually gets vantage and kills them before they get an attack)
Oh, and he has the Black Knight's sword

...An attack where you get five strikes? Holy Hell.

And a feature where the enemy can hit you but you still attack them first? That sounds awesome.

This may be the most replayable series ever, if only because of the limit on support conversations.

Do PoR or RD have alternate storyline modes, like Eliwood Mode and Hector Mode in FE7?

Seriously though, every time I play Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn, Ilyana ends up being an overpowered and ever hungry spellcaster (Poor Soren's always trailing behind her greatness). Seriously, she's a beast by the end of it all (BAM! Lightning Bolt to the face!), but that's what happens when you have favorites.

I've tried using Ilyana, really, I did. But every time, she would get mediocre levels, and her fraility forced me to write her off by mid-game. Soren, on the other hand, could mop the floor, especially if Adept decided to go off once (or twice!) Plus, Soren, with better defense growth, meant I didn't have to worry if an enemy got near him. Hell, Soren even got a kill with a staff in RD!

But no character compares to Rolf. Despite being an archer, he was a frontliner for me. He somehow maxed out defense in both PR and RD, and coupled with his speed, almost nothing could even hit him. I knew how well he was growing on me in PR when, in my first playthrough, Shinon attacked him and missed, followed by Rolf attacking (and criting) twice, killing Shinon from full. Yeah, I don't think I needed Shinon...

This is hands down my favorite series! Great story everytime.

Canas was my favorite in FE7

FE8 were the lord twins

Radiance series... Ike and Mist get that honor.

Finally the DS one... meh. remake of the first one, I am a but upset by the overwhelming numner of people you get in that game.

I am about to make a hard run through Hectors story myself as soon as school slows down.

Radiant Dawn does something a bit more interesting.  The game is divided into 4 parts.  In the first 3 parts, you start with a different group of characters.  It's hard to say anything more than that without giving a lot of spoilers though.

yeah, I didn't like sothe that much espeically in the first one, my favorite melee character was Boyd, he was killer...

Actually, after replaying most of Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones (FE8), I have to say it's awesome.

L'Arachel is a bloody fantastic character. The game makes you have a feeling that you're really one huge group working together, rather than the usual "1/2/3 people leading an army". I greatly prefer that in this one.

Doing Lagdou Ruins on hard now, and it's pretty awesome.

Overall, I feel it has more interesting characters than most FEs. The value is higher than any other (save for 10), and the "choose what to promote to" really rocks.

And shit! Floor 6 of Lagdou Ruins (I'm at it) is killing me (no deads yet). There's TEN floors? I'm gonna have to withdraw soon. Awesomesauce.

All in all: FE 8 is far better than I have given it credit for.

I also enjoyed the class selection in Sacred Stones, but adding grinding killed the game for me. Also, it's the FE I wore out my R button on from checking enemy units and such.

Curse you, FE 8!
