Forums - Nintendo - Was Nintendo's 2008 flop of a lineup merely an issue with perception?

No one would be complaining about late 2008 if Nintendo had released a bunch of exciting games in early 2009. Very few will be complaining in two months if they announce a bunch of awesome games at E3. No one will be complaining once those games actually come out.

People always complain when there's something to complain about, even if it's a little thing, and the longer the problem persists, the more people join in on the complaining.

It's interesting to think that Nintendo's increasingly negative reception from gamers could be more a problem with their release strategy than with their actual production focus. But the main reason people are complaining now is that for going on 12 months, at least in the non-sales related and hard to measure category of how excited gamers are for the new games on a console, the Wii has been getting trounced by the competition.

I'm sure it will change as well, but you might as well let the competition have the scraps they actually deserve while it lasts...

^happy with 4 games in a whole year, my my times have changed (or "gamers")...and that's exactly why third parties are not happy about it, people just buying Nintendo games.

I thought the topic is talking about Nintendo's offering in 2008? Why would I list games I bought that's not published by Nintendo?

Please do not be too quick to jump to the conclusion next time.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Ha i always called this the "nintendo pattern". The same thing (sort of) happened on the GCN. Strong start with tons of good and new stuff then the games are engulfed into a dark void where nothing huge is released until it is on its last life.

I was actually very happy with Ninty's 2008 line-up, since there are still so many games released last year that im yet to buy: Mario Kart (i play it a lot but dont own it) Wario land for example. I think people got a bit too spoiled getting Brawl, Galaxy and MKWii in such a short period of time they expected similar lineup during holidays, yet in did not happen because Ninty wanted to offer something for different users.

I am also pretty positive about the future; Punch Out , is a first day purchase for me, and im sure by the end of the year they will release few more titles that i will get instantly.

I've got my reservations about Punchout. The first one sold so well, because Mike Tyson was huge then and then he was beaten by Buster Douglas and his invincible aura started to slip a bit. And in later years more than a bit.

Also, I liked Punchout because of the characters and I was the first one of my friends to become really good at it and beat the game.

However, I was a fat kid and found it pretty easy to just sit in an easy chair, pick up the controller, now I'm kind of a stocky, lazy man going on middle-age, and I doubt if I have the energy to get out a balance board and a wii-mote and try to make all the moves that one is probably going to have to make to play this new Punchout well.

In going on thirty years of gaming, I've never wanted to get a workout from this hobby, and the closest I ever put myself to one in a game was Decathalon on the 2600 / VCS that broke your hand and your joystick.

@BTFeather: (Not so) good for you, the game is supposed to have the same controls as the first one as optional.

Probably be worth my time then, but still there won't be Tyson.  And, I can see Punchout being a good Wiiware game, but I don't know how it would be deep enough to be a $50.00 game.

The average consumer buys a new retail game once every nine or ten weeks.  That is the same on the 360, the PS3, and the Wii.  That means the average consumer buys between five and six games a year.  Nintendo published three monster games last year, and a lot of other solid games.  That should be plenty for one publisher.  Third parties should be able to fill out the last few purchases of the year.

No, I do not think that the Wii line up was a flop. Nintendo is carrying the flag for the Wii all by themselves. Therefore they had to release those games when they did. Now those teams are free to work on new IPs for the rest of this gen. The only problem that the Wii suffers from is the lack of 3rd party core games. This magnifies the lack of core games from Nintendo by a factor of 10. If third parties were doing for the Wii what they are doing for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 we would not care that Nintendo has not released a core game in a while. We'd be to busy discussing the core games developed by third parties. Hence the failure of third parties to capitalize on the success of the Wii.

Stop blaiming third parties all the time.

You will all admit that the core landscape is pretty bare on the Wii so any half decent core title released by a third party should do extremly well and still we have ahem sales from title like madworld.

Titles like Re1 or Motorstorm didn't sell 2 millions units on the PS3 because they were crazy good, they did because at the time there wasn't much competition on the console ( heck Haze sold 700k because the PS3 only had 2 shooters when it released) so users threw themselves at any half decent title that was released.

The lack of third parties core title on the Wii should help push like mad any core title that gets released, and it doesn't................

First, I will not stop blaming third parties for not supporting the wii like they should. They could make a lot of profit but they are chosing not to do so.

Secondly, the lack of core games does not necessarily translate into sales for the few that are released on a console. Core gamers purchase a console because of the breath and depth of core titles offered. This is why rpg gamers chose the PS2 and why Shooter fans chose the Xbox last gen.

Thirdly, not all core titles will be succesful. Unreal Tournament 3 bombed on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3. Outside of Lost Odessy no JRPG is performing well on the Xbox 360. Every system will have core games that fail. That's a part of life. Let's not focus on the failures of one console and blow it out of proportion like we've never seen it happen before.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

it's funny how when asked how their experience is with the Wii they refer to how well Nintendo is doing as a business, that's not the point of the thread if I read it correctly. It's about your perception as a consumer , not a business analyst .

That's funny, cause when I told you my personal experience as a consumer you dismissed it as mere anecdotal evidence.
