Was Nintendo's 2008 flop of a lineup merely an issue with perception?

Ha i always called this the "nintendo pattern". The same thing (sort of) happened on the GCN. Strong start with tons of good and new stuff then the games are engulfed into a dark void where nothing huge is released until it is on its last life.
