We knew SSD capacity would increase over time, but I didn't expect it so soon.

Indeed I think this 512GB SSD from Super Talent (on sale for $1500) now exceeds the real-world density of hard drives as well as the usual advantages of higher random read and write speeds, lower power use and no moving parts. With such capacities available it is only a matter of time before SSDs that match the top-end (1TB) of HDDs in terms of capacity appear and fall to parity in pricing.

Well then I will have to laugh at you. I expect 1TB SSDs by the end of next year.

Also Seagate announced 2TB HDDS. 500GBs per platter. 4 platters total.

Expect 1TB SSDs a lot sooner then that  :P

Acer already announced (2 months ago~) 1TB 2.5" SSD's with their Lamborghini Laptops

and

Expect Seagates 2TB HDD's sooner then that too :D

They secretly announced their 2TB HDD's are coming in a month (May)

and

OCZ expects to have 4TB SSD PCI-Slot drives by the end of the year :D

If interested I can provide ya with links, just thought Id throw that out there for those that didn't know :)

While they have their pros and cons, I'm most skeptical of their limited write cycles. It shouldn't be a problem with most files, but what about OS files that are changed, or rewritten, or temporary files, those can be erased and rewritten a lot of times.

SSD/Flash memory is the future, much less prone to any issues than a regular spinning disc HDD.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

This is great news as this drive will get used by the ones that can afford it now and then the price will gradually go down so the normal consumer can afford it and then it will only grow from there.

End of 2009 sales predictions:

PS3 - 33 Million     360 - 40 Million    Wii - 75 Million

I've said this before, I expect SSD to be the next way to distribute media through retailers, not BluRay.

SSD wont take over as a portable media format. SSD is a replacement for the HDD.

Not to open Pandora's box again, but some have been saying that advances in SSD will present a challange to brd and other formats. They are faster, and far cheaper on system requirements in design, sicne you need less pwoer and heat dissapation. Anyway, in another year or two, these will be really affordable. The current financial meltdown makes this feasible, since it's selling at low margins to convince frugal shopper of the need to get these things.

Oh I'm sorry, the organizers at thie conference who chose to hand out 64 MB flash drives instead of CDs seem to disagree with you.

similar technical components, different products.

Flash Drives are portable storage devices that can be used to transfer media files from one place to another like music . Solid State Drives are replacements for Hard Disc Drives used to store system data, media, etc including music but isnt portable unless a laptop is now being considered an MP3 player.

It's only 21 times more expensive than my 640 GB hdd :D

Through i also have small 32gig SSD for OS :)

Well, HDDs are unliklely to increase in capacity or decrease in cost from now. We are at the limit of thieir technology.

Really?

The first 1TB HDD was unveiled in Jan. 2007. I don't see them much below $100 today, and drives above 1TB are very rare and expensive. SSDs are increasing in capacity much faster. The standard hard drive size has been stagnant at 320GB for some time.

The first 15,000rpm HDD was availible in 2000. There still aren't any speeds above this, 9 years later.

Advancement comes in many forms. They thought bigger platters were bigger, easier to store, yet higher speeds for biggers platters meant more force needed and possiblity or warping. This was when HDDs were almost foot wide platters and larger. Then came 5" platters for computers in the 80s, this was huge, it was now afforable and easy to get to the consumer. Why don't we use 5" platters now? We could easily fit over 1 TB per platter if we did! Well no advantage would be found, because a 5" platter can't go faster then 3200 RPM without warping. A 3.5" drive limit is said to be 10,000 RPM, and 15,000 for 2.5". Smaller, less force, but also less data, so it's a balance. Also comes this point. If there is more data per sector, a slower RPM does not mean slower read speed. A 1 TB 7200 RPM drive will easily equal a 10,000 RPM 300 gig drive in speed.

Also, atomic holographic nanostorage devices are already working and will be on the market within 5 years, they store in a 3d medium and store 1.6 PETABYTES(1.6 million GB) of data per cubic CM. They also read at 400,000 times the bandwidth of traditional drives, and write just as fast.
