Forums - Nintendo - Nielsen: People May Buy Wii's, (But They Don't Use Them)

After looking at this graph again, there are two things of note:

1) It doesn't quite match with the numbers in the OP. The numbers generally match with the December stats on this graph, however PS3 and GC are switched.

2) The Wii is increasing its percentage of usage, so is the 360. It's the PS3 which is actually losing ground. The PS2 is as well, but that's to be expected due to the decrease of newly released compelling games.

That graph is the percentage of total minutes played i believe.

Like... if there were 100 minutes and the PS2 was played 60.  It would get a 60% on this chart.

So... gamecube is played about twice as much as the PS3 for example.

So Wii owners are playing less, and buying games at a faster rate?  That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

It kinda does.  I mean think about it.  The 360 has been out longer.  360 owners have more of a back catalogue.

I mean maybe it's just me... but when i first get a system i mostly game on my older systems until i get my library up.

I mean even if you buy an extra game every 2-3 months... I've still got a years worth of games on you if we both bought at launch.

Also sports games are much bigger on the 360.... which generally have a lot more replay value as you can play franchise modes forever.  I know a lot of people who put heavy time into their game systems just playing sports games.  They'll play daily and they only own the major sports games.

only 428k unique users for WoW? I highly doubt that one. Like extremely doubt it.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that the average PS3 user is 25-34 and all the other users are kids and teens. Kids and teens just play more than adults because adults have more responsibilities.

Console user type, what does that mean? People who own consoles besides the Wii are FAT?

I loved the age group for the Wii. 6-11 years old, really? Holy shit, I'm a little kid again. I knew that if I was vehemently resistant to grow up that it'd work.

Hooray everyone, lets have a party! =D

I think what we're seeing is lower avg play time per owner for Wii - which should not surprise anyone considering it attracts a casual crowd and casual by definition don't play as much or as long as 'core' players. However since Wii's userbase is higher than the other systems it's overall playtime is rising and close to 360's.

This also only seems to show primary users and no secondary users like all those moms with their WiiFits would definately put the Wii into a much higher age bracket if they were accounted for.

PS3 seems to be in trouble no matter how you slice it though. Wii is definitely the family machine and 360 the teens but PS3's age is suggestive that only non-family guys are getting it, or perhaps, like my brother the PS3 is his and the Wii is the kids (and wives). Since, frankly, there is almost nothing on PS3 for kids.

That's just the 25-54 year old females playing WoW. You can also see the equivalent for males, which has 675k unique users for WoW, totalling 1.1 millions unique users aged 25-54. And even then they're still not counting people with age below 25 or above 54, which is no doubt a huge chunk.

If the PS3 doesn't attract a new generation of gammers under 18, their power in the gamming world will greatly diminish. Its the 13-15 year olds of today that are going to be standing in line at midnight launches for wii2,Xbox 720, or the PS4. Not the 40-45 year olds.lol

Did this thing say the average age for wii owners is 6 to 11 years old?

Anyway, the PS3 has an older fan base because its expensive and probably the whole blue-ray thing.
