Forums - Nintendo - reggie interview. wants GTA on wii,not publishing fatal frame in USA, more

Its a good interview, but some of his answers make him sound like he's f---n crazy.

That line about demos is pretty stupid. Oh and relying and Madworld and Conduit? Son, you need some help, get some help.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

He's just tellking the interviewer what they want to hear. Those MTV games are only talking about the Conduit and Madworld and nothing else.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

I'm tempted about doing a list of games that didn't make it and arent gonna make it. NoA has some power, because there's no way NoE can get more games out when America is a bigger market. In fact the biggest market. Those saying that Disaster is niche are delusional people. It's an action game that if properly advertised could have sold well enough. NoA doesn't want to take a risk anymore. And I believe they don't want to ruin the image of Nintendo because many people would go against them if they ever released a game with ratings higher than E. FF4, Disaster, Captain Rainbow are all T or M games. NoA doesnt publish T games anymore. And then games like Endless Ocean 2, Trace Memory R and all the Japanese conference games are also too niche to come here.

What we will see from them is mostly Mario, Zelda, Wii Series, sequels to past franchises and GC ports. New IP's, T or M games, Japanese oriented games or smaller games arent gonna make it here. That's really arrogant from their part, seeing that majority of their 1st party games sold the best on America. They are too conservative and also very rude with their fans. It would hurt bringing a game that's already translated to USA English. I wonder how many games they are going to release these year. Last year it was 8 new games (4 in the first half), so far none and only 2 announce for the first half. 4 new games this year would be infuriating.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

How is it arrogant, exactly, to focus on releasing games that a reasonable portion of one's customer base will buy? If anything, it's far more arrogant to only release games which have niche appeal, as it suggests that you do not take the industry as a whole seriously. The former behaviour alienates only a minority of the customer base, whereas the latter one alienates the majority of the customer base. It's not a difficult decision to make, and it does no good to be bitter that you're not the one being pandered to.

Then why the hell did they release Disaster in the markets it was destined to do worse? If that's not being arrogant that's being stupid. Nintendo is not stupid, but NoA is.

That game was already translated with full voice acting from USA actors. Why the hell aren't they releasing it here? You can't justify everything Nintendo does. Nintendo of America is not doing a good job when it comes to first party games. Core games barely receive any ads and then others dont even get released. If you believe core games dont sell on the Wii, then you have a belief that opposes that of Nintendo and their broader audience appeal. If they want to be successful they have to target as many people as they can, not only a select few like you imply. I'm happy for all these new owners that are enjoying videogaming for the first time, but I say the have to be more careful about what they do with their longtime fans. NoA has been seriously getting behind in terms of publishing, to the point that every single announcement Nintendo makes becomes a mistery. We will never know if such game will make it to the USA anymore. Europeans and Japanese gamers get the games, why can't we? Why would they fail in the USA, the biggest market, but succeed in smaller markets? You make no sense.

I totally agree that Disaster could have done wonderful and Nintendo screwed it up

I make no sense? Hm. Perhaps from your perspective as a "neglected consumer", I don't... Although nothing I've said is at all surprising to anybody who has a solid understanding of survivalist business practices. There's absolutely nothing obtuse about garnering and maintaining a large user base, even if it means temporarily sacrificing a portion of the user base to pander to a more fickle and significantly larger portion of it.

Though I will admit that it does seem a bit odd to not release D:DoC here when it's fully localized, unless there's some risk of either mass market alienation or insufficient sales to justify it. I, like you, lack the full details of the decision, and thus cannot say with any certainty what the actual reasoning is. Making simplistic statements like "they're idiots" isn't satisfactory. Nor is making excuses for them without information. We simply have to accept that we don't know, and not make assumptions.

That's embarrassing for NoA.

@Sky Render: Well, that's true also. But their current marketing tactics and choices about not publishing games that were already localized do make them look like incompetent people. I say we give up on any hopes for most Nintendo games as long as the current team behind NoA stays in activity. I don't want to import nor do I want to ilegally play games, but I will because they dont want me to give them my money.

I wouldn't lose faith so quickly in them. You have to put it into perspective: the Wii's user base in America has been growing at a pace that is unprecedented and even frightening. Most of these new users are very fickle compared to those of us who prefer core franchise titles. We are much more forgiving and willing to come back as soon as they fix whatever offends us about their current practices.

I know it kind of sucks for us, but it won't be this way forever. Eventually, the Wii's user base will solidify, and we'll see more core focus. Yes, it's a bit of a wait, but isn't waiting what we're pretty much used to doing in this industry anyway?
