Forums - Sales - Nintendo's Japan base crumbling? Wii sales only 39k last week..

Oh right, forgot to write on topic :P

Seems to me that this is a drought brought up by the lack of new software. Things will probably return to (ab?)normal when new games arrive on the Jap scene.

It's entirely possible Nintendo has decided to start diverting some thousands of units per week away from Japan, because they feel they have the region secured and want to focus more on the other two. Europe and the US have both had enormous sales at almost 100k and 120k respectively the last few, so it certainly would make sense.

It does seem a pretty radical drop though, and I'm not sure I'd be doing anything similar if I was calling the shots at Nintendo. Must be a part of their world-domination master plan. =/

Yes,

Surely stock diversion or stock piling is a reason for the drop off and as mentioned the return to school. Even if it is a sales slump it will help general availability of the console.

With Christmas on the way and SMG, Brawl and Metroid 3 (EU) destined to be a huge sales boost Nintendo is going to want to be able to try and meet some of the demand.

I'm sorry but before that Japan didn't have strong releases either and still the WII was selling at a range of 60-70.000 per week. The drop is kind of a worry, especially as there "won't" be any interesting titles for the Japanese to release until October.

Well, from the numbers I see there was a boost in the Dragon Sword week, then a slow decline. Then there was a boost in the Mario Party week, and it's declining since. Not too unusual.

Again, what's the next release in Japan? Does enybody know? Thx.

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

The 20th has atleast 3 games out.

Mario Strikers, Sims and Samurai Warriors" Katana.

All of them should do pretty well i'd guess.

^^ Sims not that much.

Two weeks ago worldwide: http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39320
Last week worldwide: http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39327

Worldwide sales went up. Nintendo shifted units.

^^ Agree.

Sharky, WTH are you talking about?? That's like saying, last week was cooler than average, therefore we must be headed into an ice age! You need more than one week's worth of data to make a prediction like that.

And PS3 will need more than just a slight drop in Wii sales (to 49k by the way, not 39k) to catch back up. According to the following article, Wii has kicked all ass in Japan. Seriously, read that article, look at the title of the thread, and tell me if it makes any sense at all in the long term.

It's possible units have been sent to America for Metroid.
It's also possible that retailers themselves are holding units in antecipation for Mario Galaxy, that unofficial bundles will show up, etc.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.
