Actually, the game doesn't get much better with time. Emil is still annoying as hell until the end of the game. The pokemon monster catching thing is retarded. The plot is also rather ridiculous and has little to do with that of the original game. I think it a worse spinoff than FFX-2 was.

That's not possible. If wanted to see Charlies Angels, I would have rented the DVD. FFX-2 is travesty and that is inspite of the top notch play. The bastardization of the Final Fantasy X characters and overall universe is just plain unforgiveable. Not to mention the story has was beyond ridiculous. I mean the series of events and unlikelihoods that would have to be brought about for the FFX-2 plot to be possible is ridiculous, even by gaming standards. I think the only character that remained consistent between FFX and FFX-2 was Rikku. Sorry for the mini rant but FFX-2 is one of my most hated games in the series.

Agreed.

It's a shame that people only start hating on some games months after release, when i bought it everybody was talking how great it is and how Daemon on IGN was an idiot for giving the game a 6.7 (Good thing i only expected this game to be ok)

Daemon's review of the game was joke. He complained about staples of the JRPG genre in the review. Any review that complains about the basic features of genre is made of fail.

I disagree.

A game can have a repetitive fighting mechanic and work great, another game can have the same repetitive fighting mechanic and fail.

It all depend how well it was implented into the game.

I dont get it, why would anyone create a character so annoying as Emil? Im sure it gets explained, but how can this be the leader of the resistance? He doesnt have any backbone

@ Bardicverse

You should have gotten Tales of Vesperia instead.

When he's "possessed" by Ratatosk, he seems to be a totally different person.

Huh, I just re-read Daemon's review, I don't see where he bashes the genre itself. He simply states that the game is doing nothing new, which could be forgivable if it was doing what it does well, but it doesn't.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

www.xnagg.com/zombieasteroids/publish.htm

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

It picks up, but still does alot of extremely annoying things. The monster catching is ridiculously simplistic and really only serves to allow them to only give you two new main characters and fill the rest in with ToS characters that can be switched in and out. I also grew annoyed with Emil's infatuation with that badass type character who he meets in the beginning. Had so many flashbacks with that guy as the main focus I thought Emil and him were going to end up together in the end.

In the end, it does enough things to make up for the faults to a point and bring itself up to an average game.

...

I personally found DotNW to be great fun. Not as spectacular as the original Symphonia, but still a very solid game to play. I do admit that I was a bit iffy about Emil at first, but he grew on me, and in the end I found him to be a very realized character, especially at the midway point where he has to struggle between being himself or the rougher, mean-spirited Ratatosk. I found that character aspect very intriguing. I also liked Marta and Tenebrae; they served as very enjoyable characters, and I was really surprised at how much I liked Laura Bailey as Marta. Tenebrae has all the best lines, too.

I must be in the minority here, but I found the game to be very captivating from the start, and in spite of the slow spots, I still really didn't care, especially since I found it a joy to revisit the world that engrossed me in the original.

All in all, I'd say it's a great title. Not a AAA masterpiece by any means, but still a solid little game which is actually better than its "spin-off" reputation makes it out to be.

I actually agree with everything you said. I think that I may feel worse about the ToS spin-off than the FFX one because Tales of Symphonia is one of my favourite game of all time. So, I was really disppointed by Dawn of the New World. I liked FFX but I knew the spin-off wouldn't be nearly as good. Now, Majora's Mask, that was a very good spin-off.

You can make RPG's interesting from the start. You either have to get an interesting premise going right away or make the characters worth caring about as quickly as possible, as well as trying to minimize any issues that might get on the player's nerves, like bad voice acting or dialogue. Many RPG's do this.

I've never played an RPG like that, then.

I give RPG's around 10 hours or so to prove themselfs. It usually takes around 8-10 for the RPG to actually be interesting story wise from my experience.

I haven't played many 3-d JRPGs but off the top of my head Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana both jump into an intriguing story in the first 10 minutes, let alone the first 10 hours. Chrono Trigger especially was well told and had great sympathetic characters.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
