I personally found DotNW to be great fun. Not as spectacular as the original Symphonia, but still a very solid game to play. I do admit that I was a bit iffy about Emil at first, but he grew on me, and in the end I found him to be a very realized character, especially at the midway point where he has to struggle between being himself or the rougher, mean-spirited Ratatosk. I found that character aspect very intriguing. I also liked Marta and Tenebrae; they served as very enjoyable characters, and I was really surprised at how much I liked Laura Bailey as Marta. Tenebrae has all the best lines, too.
I must be in the minority here, but I found the game to be very captivating from the start, and in spite of the slow spots, I still really didn't care, especially since I found it a joy to revisit the world that engrossed me in the original.
All in all, I'd say it's a great title. Not a AAA masterpiece by any means, but still a solid little game which is actually better than its "spin-off" reputation makes it out to be.
