Your problem is that you're projecting your own values onto the general populace, when in truth the general populace simply doesn't share your values, as shown by the fact that many consoles with poor graphics compared to their contemporaries have won generations and continued to sell for years after.

Contemporaries have never delved into the age of hardware the Wii has.  It's uncharted territory.

What? The NES was way below it's contemporaries. What's different now?

Really?  First of all any level of difference in the NES / It's contemporaries was far less then what we see now.  Secondly,  (NES lasted from Late 1985 to Late 1991 in North America and   Thirdly of all who was the NES's technlogically superior opponents?

Two things concern me about the wii beating the PS2.

1. Will the wii reach a saturation point?

2. Can the video game market really support 250 million consoles sold?

If you can convince me that the answer to one is no and the answer to 2 is yes than the Wii can and probably will beat the PS2.

1 is actually an interesting question, especially relating to the reliability of the hardware. The failure rate of the Wii so far is much lower than the historical failure rate of the PS2, so it owuld appear that there will be fewer hardware-related repeat buys.

If it was a comment about the X360 instead of the PS2, one would get a three months ban at the very least. Sad.

You do know everyone can edit and wright wikipedia right? It has'nt sold 140M consoles, but shipped. It's clearly obvious that the wii will sell more IF Nintendo doesn't kill it's console early, and why would they do that anyway?

The Amiga and other game-centric PC's were believed to be the future for gaming at that time. They were vastly superior in technology to the NES. Even the other consoles were technologically well ahead of the NES, here's the comparison from wiki:

A game I'm developing with some friends:

www.xnagg.com/zombieasteroids/publish.htm

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I keep hearing people saying that the Wii will hit a wall after a while because of the technology behind it (this has been said from the beginning the litle white box came out) , this a a fallacy, when will you people realize that the game industry is not a technology but about entertainment, if what you believe is true shouldn't the PS3 and 360 be outselling the Wii?

Yet i see the console with the "out of date technology" (as so many gamers call it) smacking the dust off the other to technologically advanced systems. Funny thing is the Wii also has the largest breadth of games (genre wise) compared to the other systems, i think that plays a lot more importance, and as this gen comes to an end a lot of you will realize it. I think the Wii will outsell the PS2 sales wise, it has already done it profit wise, and i think Nintendo finds that a lot more important.

Practically all in that list don't even technically fall into the same generation and/or all of them represent a drastic failure of a system for many more ways than the graphics.  Nintendo had unparalleled software dominance by forcing timed exclusivity contracts.  Otherwise, companies probably would have made games for these other systems.  As such it held on longer than it should have most likely.    Which is a stark contrast to today.  In fact it's almost completely opposite.   Most outside third party companies are giving their support to the HD consoles with new IPs, etc.

Sony and Microsoft provide actual competition (Something that NES didn't face until Sega Genesis came out.)  Which is really a more comparable example.   NES versus a console a generation ahead in terms of hardware.  Mind you,  shortly thereafter Nintendo released the SNES.

even if Wii sells less, it will be a more proftiable system. that is equally important in winning the gen. as it means nintendo can keep on doing their 'thing'!

I think this is a case of someone from Sony misspeaking (subsequent comments clarified it) ... but the citation took on a life of its own because of the Internet.

The high sales figure matched some people's perceptions ... so it stuck, even though it was a 10M unit misstatement.
