No, I started with Suikoden II. Which is better than what any RPG will ever be

I have to admit I've never played a Suikoden game, but I do know they are not classic JRPGs.  So yeah, in the JRPG world, you are a kid to me.

What do you understand as classic? Do you only take into account the age of the game? Or does it have to include some features, like cliched story, or ancient gameplay? Anyway, I've played and loved FF6, it has a 100 times better story and gameplay than DQ8 and came out 12 years earlier. That tells you something

FFVI is not classic in style. DQ games are. It's a style that focuses on unique and wonderful worlds full of exploration and content, and extreme challenge in combat. This is more what the original FF and DQ games were. DQVIII expands on that some with a good well-developed cast, but sticks with the throwaway plot. The purpose of DQVIII isn't to be enraptured by some great plot (Most of which are cheesy in the end in JRPGs anyway), but to give you an amazing and well-developed world to explore, and a challenging experience throughout.

So you're trying to use his opinion that DQVIII was both boring and the fact that it's an RPG with little to no story to discredit him? That seems kind of dumb. DQVIII was boring to me as well as other people and I've played a bunch of JRPG's and enjoyed them but the DQ series was not for me and I dont think I'm a kid to anyone and I dont think  you should be calling someone a kid because they dont like a particular series that you like, thats just real immature and something only kids would do.

I was trying to explain to him that his scope of RPG experiences was not "all-knowing" and other people who appreciated a different style might enjoy DQVIII, despite his very absolute statement that DQVIII was awful. So yes, I'm trying to show that he has parts of the RPG genre he's ignorant of, just as you do.

I dont get it, Im ignorant because I dont like something? I didnt say I've never played DQ or that I wouldnt give it the credit it deserved for helping push the JRPG Genre forward, I just said I didnt like it and there are other games that I would enjoy. To say Im ignorant because my tastes arent like yours is not only Ignorant but it shows how close-minded you can be just because someone doesnt like something you like.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

People who haven't played a single RPG before the SNES generation probably shouldn't be presenting their opinions of the genre as gospel. I understand some people don't enjoy DQ games. I'm saying don't use that as an excuse to attack the game just because you don't understand it or enjoy that style.

*ehem* Final Fantasy XII *ehem*

Seriously though guys.

Dragon Quest is awesome.

I'm playing DQIV right now!

I never played DQVIII but I'm willing to bet it's awesome too, even if it's slow.

I absolutely recognize FFXII can be a good game for some people. I hate on it as a personal experience, not as a quality of game. Objectively: It's one of the best looking PS2 games, fixed random battles in FF games finally, is full of content, and very large.

I hated the plot and characters, and I thought it was too easy, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize it as viewable as a good game.

ShadowSoldier, I think you are mistaking the definition of ignorance. It just means you lack knowledge or experience in a certain area. I'm ignorant of quite a lot of things. Admittedly, not a whole lot in gaming, but I'm ignorant of the fighting genre at least.

FFX of course.

@Naznatipz:

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like you're suggesting JRPG's that follow that one specific formula are the only one's that should be considered classic. If that's what you're really saying, I'm going to have to say that you are indeed wrong. The genre has come so far and evolved so much that any number of things could be deemed classic -- things like turn-based combat, 2D sprites, or even certain story telling styles. Now, keep in mind that I do agree that Dragon Quest VIII is a classic-styled JRPG and a great one at that. I would even go as far as to say it's one of the best on the PS2; however, it's not the only type of RPG that could be considered classic, nor are JRPG that debuted before the SNES.

 @Nazantips

I don't understand, are you saying you are an expert of the RPG genre then, or at least the classic RPG genre?  As you admitted to never playing a suikoden game, which is a huge RPG series, so I think that disqualifies you as an expert.  Another thing I don't understand is you say that DQVIII is great because it sticks to the classic formula of a throwaway plot, but hate FFXII because it has a dumb plot... That is kind of inconsistent.  I have been playing RPG's since the orignial FF and dragon warrior days, and I have to say the classic formula is dead, and good riddance.  That is my opinion of course, but I would have to say you can't really be calling people ignorant for not liking outdated gameplay.

@zexen:
I think what Naz was upset about is the fact that while you may not have enjoyed the game, he knows other people might, as he did it himself, and because of your bad mouthing it they might be afraid to try it and never have a chance to see it for themselves.
Wow, that was a long phrase.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Seems like no one likes Kingdom Hearts here even though it was prolly one of the highest selling RPGs on the PS2 :(

I like Kingdom Hearts...
