Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon: My reflections on why the series is no longer fun

Well i thought changing the elements to be either physical attack or special attack depending on the specific move was a really cool change.

I guess some big changes would be that underground thing & the ability to use the stylist. Thing is underground got boring quick & i prefer not using stylist.

Also, platinum adds some 3D thing that looks interesting, so i think they are still trying to innovate with it.

I haven't read it all but you started off with 'a little over 11 years ago.....'

So I then looked at your profile.

and my reply would be...

Or it could be that 11 years ago you were 8 and were not interested in games with killing and swearing and women, drinking, partying.

In other words your've grown up.

Sir, you yourself are nearly forty. Are you of the opinion that Pokemon is a child's game?

Wouldn't this technically be

As 8, you loved Nintendo, as 19 that's impossible?

And secondly.

Pokemon isn't gonna change. Will he start liking it again when he turns 30? I mean, there's lots of 30 years old that love Pokemon. There's a flaw in this design that many people make.

Kids (5-15) love Nintendo.

Real gamers (15-30) don't.

30-45 are kinda in the middle

50 + love Nintendo.

Do you "take a break" from Nintendo for 35 years?

Finally.

I still like the exact same things as I liked when I was 11. I play the same games, watch the same kind of series, same games, play virtually the same sports, have pretty much the same friends, and have generally pretty much identical hobbies. This does not include killing, swearing, drinking or partying. .

Does that mean I haven't grown up at all?

On topic:

I didn't really like Diamond/Pearl. I wasn't a huge fan of Ruby/sapphire either. Frankly, I prefer Gold/Silver over both of them. Heck, after playing Diamond to Pokemon League (not finishing it... I had somehow gone so I would have to grind 5 levels on all my pokemons would have a chance), I started playing Silver again (everyone in my family played Pokemon, so we have 3 Pokemon Silvers and 2 Golds). I liked it better, as it felt less like "do that" for some reason.

Hmm... Could Pokemon have outgrown me? :O

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

There was definitely a pacing problem with Diamond and Pearl, a problem which was exacerbated by an extreme level creep at the end and further exacerbated by the very slow combat.

I ended up beating the Champion with a team whose average level was 10-15 lower than hers. It took a lot of buffing and liberal use of my Dialga.

Grinding to an appropriate level would have taken so long that I didn't feel it was worth it.

I never really played much after beating Cynthia, which is a shame.

I'll need to ask some Platinum players if the leveling rate is more balanced.

Don't play the game then.

In a game with such a complex battle system like pokemon (I dare you find a turn based RPG moreso complex) small changes for you are actually big changes for the hardcore fans.

From Red to Platinum

- Breeding
- Genders
- Special Att / Sp. Def Split
- Online
- Abilities
- Happiness
- Day and Night
- Weather
- Battle Tower
- Physical / Special Split
- Hidden Power
- Contests
- Doubles
- Hold Items
- Dark and Steel

This may sound weird, but Pokemon is really a game for the hardcore, and a case where the newest game is always the best. The series instead of major overhauls, focuses instead on incremental improvements, and keeping their fanbase happy. Those maybe just bells and whistles to you, but those are true godsends for a lot.

Also take into account that Pokemon is a competitive game. You can only do so much before you alienate your original fanbase.

Also when has a series really changed it's core gameplay? Most especially an RPG series?

A little series called Final Fantasy. That's the only reason I could play VII - XII(-XI) is because they were vastly different from each other from battle systems to everything else.  Though i haven't played them I hear the same about the SMT series as well.

For me, Pokemon has been in decline ever since the original games. Of course, this is also something about the TV series, which I loved when I was young.

The original games were good, but with every new portion of pokemon that was added to the pool, it felt like it was nothing but pure milking of the series, and the novelty wore off.

The perfect Pokemon game for me, would be a Pokemon game set in the world of the first games. 151 pokemons, 8 gyms to visit and beat the leaders of and one final league to beat.

It should have a new story, a story that... you know... was an actual story Not just "Recieve pokemon, win 8 badges, beat final league and rival", but while still keeping this principale, a better story!

It should have a 3rd person camera and released for the Wii, filled with exploration and what not. Make some changes to the battle system, but only so it has the "7th generation console, gameplay has actually evolved a bit" feel.

Damn...

I just made this up, and now I want it so badly

I agree with that.

Also, the music (which to me is incredibly important) was kinda crappy in Diamond/Pearl.

I felt that

Pokemon Diamond has

- Worse music than Silver

- Not nearly as good Pokemon as Silver

- Less funny comments

- More grinding based

The problem isn't that it is more of the same, it is that is worse at doing the same stuff.

I haven't played Pokemon since Red/Blue.. so I don't really care what you're blathering about..

My issue is with your comment on cake.. which I highly disagree with. Cake is always good. Cake will always be good. Why do you hate cake? Do you have to buy a new exoticly flavored cake each time you eat cake? What form of anti-americanism is this?

I don't know, I'm with the OP. I feel when I play Pokemon today, it's basically the same game. Maybe there are small changes as you guys have argued, but I just don't get into hem either.
