For me, Pokemon has been in decline ever since the original games. Of course, this is also something about the TV series, which I loved when I was young.
The original games were good, but with every new portion of pokemon that was added to the pool, it felt like it was nothing but pure milking of the series, and the novelty wore off.
The perfect Pokemon game for me, would be a Pokemon game set in the world of the first games. 151 pokemons, 8 gyms to visit and beat the leaders of and one final league to beat.
It should have a new story, a story that... you know... was an actual story 
Not just "Recieve pokemon, win 8 badges, beat final league and rival", but while still keeping this principale, a better story!
It should have a 3rd person camera and released for the Wii, filled with exploration and what not. Make some changes to the battle system, but only so it has the "7th generation console, gameplay has actually evolved a bit" feel.
Damn...
I just made this up, and now I want it so badly
