There was definitely a pacing problem with Diamond and Pearl, a problem which was exacerbated by an extreme level creep at the end and further exacerbated by the very slow combat.
I ended up beating the Champion with a team whose average level was 10-15 lower than hers. It took a lot of buffing and liberal use of my Dialga.
Grinding to an appropriate level would have taken so long that I didn't feel it was worth it.
I never really played much after beating Cynthia, which is a shame.
I'll need to ask some Platinum players if the leveling rate is more balanced.
