Forums - Gaming - Why does everyone seem to think that any M-rated game is wrong for the Wii?

Every time that someone attempts to make a "harder edged" game for the Wii, there seems to be an outcry about it.

Groups who represent "the family" complain that the "family friendly" console has something that is not "family friendly."  Meanwhile, the "snobcore" ranging from pundants to (forum) posters all complain that a game was released "on the wrong console" when the first week sales do not explode out of the gate.

Is it just me or is this type of system-choice bashing is almost exclusively reserved for the Wii (among consoles and more generally for Nintendo products for those following the GTA on DS release debate)?

I can only remember a couple of times people saying that games should have been released on the Wii instead of on another console. These were Little Big Planet for the PS3 and Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360. In the LBP case, the game has done well (over 2M on a 21M base) and is serving as a major new IP for Sony.  So this seems to have worked (and since it was published by Sony, the game was not going anywhere else).  In the BK case, the game seems to have sold poorly (0.21M on a 29M base) and a game about rolling a ball probably would have done better on the Wii (Super Monkey Ball is listed at 0.71M, Kororinpa is listed at 0.11M without Others numbers but has gotten a sequel).

Getting back to the original purpose of this post though, I guess it seems disingenuous for people to complain about the Wii being a "kiddie" console and then complain when it tries to do something that is not "kiddie."

Thoughts?

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Ignorance on both sides. Ignorance from the mass market that Nintendo is trying to court, and ignorance from the group that Nintendo has supposedly "abandoned,"

It just shows that the Blue Ocean is, in part, jealous of the Red Ocean as the Red is of the Blue.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Partly it's the nature of those M titles. HoTD rate in the Guiness World Records for most swearing. MadWorld and ManHunt 2 are both way over the top killings - more violent than most HD M games.

GTA:CW has a huge drug selling component.

If Conduit got an M I doubt anyone would care. If Grey's Anatomy got an M cause of stintilating sex scenes with McDreamy (assume no real nudity though) I don't imagine mothers would be up in arms (except trying to buy a copy).

But when parents are used to being able to buy any game on the shelves for thier kids, or even themselves when they have little ones at home and then discover the F-Bomb fest that is HoTD or extreme killing spree that is MadWorld and realize that not only can the kids not play it but neither can they until the wee hours of the night, it does come as a shock.

Most Wii owners are not as informed as people on this site. And most parents do not pay attention to the M rating. I've seen way too many little kids playing GTA.

Nintendo and there comercials....you guy's seen the new DS comercials with the 2 women playing DS???

People seem to associate Nintendo products with kids. Nintendo seems to market them that way. There are alot of kid and family type games on the Wii and when a mature rated game is released it seems to stand out. Imagine looking through the Disney section of DVDs in a store and seeing a "girls gone wild" dvd in the middle of it.

If a person isnt a hardcore gamer (like most of us on this site) it really stands out to them. Then ignorance mode kicks in and they seem to think something is wrong with a mature rated game.

Right Wing Media + Violent Games = Scape Goat of the Decade

the media hate the idea of any violent game, one on the Wii (marketed at younger kids, i guess?) seems to really piss them off, i hope we see ALOT more of these games on the Wii, for 2 reasons, 1 i like them, 2 it proves just how right wing the media is

@ SciFiBoy

You are right bro, the media only makes it worse. They also celebrate tools like Jack Thompson.

M-rated demographics appear to own more HD consoles than Wiis. Pretty simple, really.

That doesn't mean there should be no M-rated games on the Wii, or that they will do poorly -- they will just perform weaker than on the HD consoles, and there will be fewer of them overall.

While the competition is limited on the Wii, there appear to be as many as 8 times as many potential M-rated demographics on the PS360 as on the Wii, which which makes it harder to justify the cost of even a low-cost Wii M-rated game. The fact that the Wii M-rated market isn't crowded (yet) is a big boon right now, but that could change as well over time, as a double-edged sword effect of Wii titles having legs.

Personally, I think these are all different groups of people.

Those who complain about games like MadWorld and HotD are most likely people who just realized that the games available for the Wii are in fact not 100% kiddy friendly, which means there is a risk that a such game might be played on their very own console, possibly by their own kids!

Those who complain about a game releasing on the wrong console are probably either jealous of the title, or has a stereotype about all owners of the console in question, which the game does not fit with.

Personally, I want to see the Wii be succesful at hardcore games. After all, a game like MadWorld could never exist on the PS360 without losing some of the things that make it unique in its genre, namely the controls.
But before a game like MadWorld will sell well (I personally don't think MadWorld will sell all too well because of the Wii's current userbase combined with the game's shortcoming, but I hope time proves me wrong), there needs to be other games on the Wii that will attract the people who will buy the hardcore games on the system.
So, in order for the Wii to become interesting (or just for ignorant people to change their mindset about the Wii), there needs to be games out for it which will "suffer" from sales we might consider low. Although I have no idea what publishers are aiming at with a release like MadWorld, so that term is relative.

I don't know do i really add anything into the conversation with this post.

Nintendo has made an family friendly image for itself, when games that overshoot with their violence are seen as "twice as bad".
GTA:CW drugdealing is about the same level "bad" as GTA4:s drunk driving, but CW is on family friendly platform and therefore is worse.
Madworld has excessive amount of gore, but the motorsaw in Gears of War had it too. Despite Gears of War causing loud noise due to violence, it wasn't as bad as it wasn't on family friendly platform.
In any case, the only problem is the parents don't keep track of the games their kids play or the games that parents buy for their kids.

As for the "hardcore" whining, it happens when a game that they'd want to see on their platform comes out on Wii.

@Procrastinato: Some games would do better on PS360 when judging by raw sales, but it doesn't mean they'd do better financially. Also the not crowded market makes it possible to make games with lower budget to try out new consepts.
