Forums - Sales - How would you define a flop?

Its a flop when a game is supposed to sell millions first day and what not, thats a flop.

Around the Network

Its a flop if its a PS3 exclusive and it sells less than 1,000,000 copies first week.

Tease.

Considering how noone agree on the definition, I understand better the endless threads.

Do you think we'll find a way to make a standard definition?

Maybe it's not a good idea... after all this site is all about discussing and trying to make your point...

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

Something like this cannot be standardized. Different game have different expectation.

A game can sell well and get good reviews and still be considered a flop. Fanboys will have a say on the forums when they fight in the console system wars.

Fanboys will insert Flop in to the name of any game exclusive to a rival system.

PS3 fans will say in regards to X360 games: Gears of flop 2, Flop-floppie: Nots and Bolts, Perfect flop zero, Failo 3, flop 2, Mass Flop, Infinite Unfloppery, Flop Odyssey, Fail Human, etc all those games flopped.
360 fans will counter this and say look at: Flopzone 2, Little Big Flop, Floppance:Fall of Man, Flop Chronicles, Flop Turismo 5, God of Flop 3, etc.

Games that are on your system as a fanatic of a particular console you would never say a bad thing about it if its multi-platform or exclusive to your console system. Fanboys never say a bad thing about exclusive games on their system they will defend it even if they know deep down it is not a good game.

A game is a flop if it doesn't meet sales expectations by a LARGE margin. I will let others decide what that margin is. I would use the expectations of the people selling the game, rather than the people who follow the industry or "fans" and fanboys. Fanboys tend to set up the expectation game where a lot of titles will be branded flops that shouldn't be.

Like, is Killzone 2 a flop? I would say no. But people will try to spin the buzz to be that it was supposed to beat Halo. How about Resistance 2? Same story here.

I thought we could have at least came to a consensus about what does NOT define a flop.

Not meeting VGC forumers sales expectations really doesn't define a flop for me, but it seems it's not even so for everyone.

Maybe we could make a poll out of it?

A flop is when the devs don't make their money back.

A disappointment is a game that performs lower than expected.
