Forums - Sony - New Sony fee a HUGE loss for PS3 owners --- O RLY?!!

This plan is extremely stupid, if only because they are also charging this fee on free content. The likelihood of demos and free DLC goes way down with this, and it's also likely that publishers will begin removing older products from the PlayStation Store. Accidentally delete the MGS Database? Good luck redownloading it, because Konami just removed it!

I think that the post said that the fee will only be charged for the first 60 days so I doubt that anyone would be deleting older files... I;m hoping anyways :)

I think it would be reasonable, nay, more than reasonable if this charge was applied only to paid downloadable content. Applying these charges to free content like demos and small add-ons doesn't make sense, and just encourages the publishers to hold them back.

With that being said, we haven't really seen any backlash from this, yet.
Either way, as long as I can log on to an online service for free (y'know, the ordinary way to offer online) without losing a plethora of content, then I'm fine.

I think this article completely misses the point of making a demo avaliable for download. They make it seem like demos are there for people to play free games that are really really short. Demo's are for publishers to get people to BUY the game. If the demo is only 10 seconds long it's not going to get anyone to buy the game. If they do have to pay a few cents per download well they will have to determine if it's worth it to make a demo or not. If less people are making demos or uploading videos then it reduces the clutter and it now becomes more appealing for publishers to upload demos and try to win purchases with it.

Indeed it does:

but free content is charged only for the first 60 days of availability on the network.

Thanks for pointing that out.  That does change things.

Though some free DLC may still be at risk, but the only common free DLC I can think of comes from LBP, and that obviously wouldn't be affected by this.

I'll say the same thing here as in the other thread. DLC is going to start cost more on PSN than on XBL and PSN will start to see fewer demos. Publisher aren't just going eat the additional cost. They are going to pass it on to consumers.

Your 100% correct.  It may take a little while for this to start happening but eventually it will.

Well you pay for quality and it shows with xbox live and not so much with the ps3.

You have to pay for quality? Is that what RROD is? Quality?

Hmmm quality on XBL? Nice qualities yes, but I didnt see any quality worth paying for.  But PSN also has nice qualities =)
