no this is not widespread and is no more common than other failures in different consoles.
Long Live SHIO!

Long Live SHIO!
Theres a repair thread on the other site I frequent and RROD is still the issue 90% of the time. I wouldn't call 10% the new majority.
It's just that simple.

There is an ongoing scare campaign trying to turn this into the new boogeyman now that the RROD is sort-of-gone.
The whole "fault intolerant" bit is ridicolous, no console on the market will survive if one of the big slabs of silicon inside goes bust. This ain't military grade equipment, the companies can't aford redundancy in consumer products with thin margins.
Goddammit stop coming up with reasons for me to fear for the life of my 360!

NOTE: If you come in to flame or troll, I will report you. That's a promise. West Virginian Joystiq.com super blogger and Monte Cristo sandwich fanboy Justin McElroy has authored a series of stunning posts that bring the rising trend of a disturbing Xbox 360 error to light. The E74 error is caused when the "ANA" image scaler chip fails, overheats or there is serious AV connection problem. The hot air flow from the CPU and GPU goes right over the location of the ANA chip so it might be slowly cooked by normal use. An Xbox 360 that is suffering an E74 error will have the lower-right quadrant of the Ring of Light flash on the front on the console and a multiple languages error message may display that will read "E74. System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support." or the screen will simply glitch out and display a feild of video snow. The E74 errors can show up during game play causing the game to lock up. It might go away after the system has a chance to cool off but some Xbox 360 consoles will have chronically reocurring E74 errors making them un-usable and un-fun. This sucks for everyone involved. It sucks for the gamers and it sucks for Microsoft since they want you to have a working console and to buy more Xbox games. This sucks since videogames are supposed to be fun. Users should not have to worry about getting an E74 or RROD hardware failure error. In my RROD insider articles I pointed out that the Xbox 360 has a fault intolerant electronic hardware design. That basically means that once there is a failure in one part of the design the entire system will stop. Source: http://blog.seattlepi.com/digitaljoystick/archives/164682.asp?from=blog_last3

the E74 system error, can easly become a red ring, as red ring is mainly caused by unseating of the GPU "which can be heat related" however your listing of e74 as mainly having to do with ANA chip is misleading an E74 means some part of the video system from gpu all they way to the conection to the TV is screwed up. yes this does include the ANA chip. and yes it has become more common reason for the fault. as the GPU issues have become fixed and it does not warp itself out ofplace anymore, compnents further down the line that were more tolernt of heat become exposed. the ANA chip does not have the same type of seating that the gpu has.
it basically comes down to this when you get a red ring the system does not quite no whats wrong but it knows its bad. an E74 the system can talk to the malfunctioning part. if you push the part futher it will fail and the system will red ring.

No, my old model got the E74 error last year. It immediately RROD'd, though.
yeah this is an old problem, thats been around since the 360 came out. Not very widespread, and the chances that your 360 will get the E-74 are very slim.
This is why i wont waste anymore money on the threesix.. seriously, arent you guys afraid of playing your 360's? I mean damn, they still havent fixed the red ring. The chances for E-74 is NOT slim, the forums are spammed with it, FYI its a 50% chance that you will get either E-74 or RROD. Damn... :)
2 reasons for 360 sales.
Cheap arcade version, wich the mom buys for the kids.
And microsoft's wallet.
