Forums - Gaming - Name some gaming "Masterpieces" that you hated.

What are the games that many regard as among the best of all time that you hated? Tell us why you hated them. You're allowed to be as biased as you want and your reasoning need not be logical nor fair.

I'll start:

The Legend of Zelda Twighlight Princess

It was hard as a Gamecube owner to ignore all of the cool games coming out for the PS2 and X-Box. I was a huge Final Fantasy fan during the SNES era and besideds FF7, I had not been able to play any Final Fantasy games. But I would always console myself knowing that the Twighlight princess was coming out. Sure Gamecube has amazing games like RE: Remake, RE 4 and Metroid Prime, but these games were few and far between. Then Nintendo decides to delay the game for a year so they can port it to the Wii. That alone was infuriating. Good for the Wii that they get a quality Zelda game right away, but to actually delay the Gamecube version for a year and an additional month to milk Wii sales? That was my reward for sticking with Nintendo through their dark ages? When I finaly had a chance to play the game I was bored out of my mind. I didn't like the story. Being a wolf was fun for about 2 seconds before I got tired of sniffing trails. The graphics which would have been amazing in 2005 were no longer cutting edge they looked dated by 2006. The textures were so blury they hurt my eyes. 2 years later I have yet to finish this game. The Ocarina of Time it is not. After the twighlight Princess I knew I would never be a Nintendo fanboy again.

The Shadow of the Colossus

Recently I got a PS2 to try out classics such as this one. I simply cant get into it as the graphics are horrid and the control even worse. It is an awsome concept and original. I hape a sequal will have smoother controls and textures.

Gears of War... its as standard at shooters get... And the graphics did not impress me much.

Well since you mentioned Final Fantasy....

Final Fantasy -

The production values and music turn me on to the game but the random encounters and unnecessarily complicated turn-based gameplay turn me right off.

Racing games -

Too boring and i'm not too interested in cars to begin with.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

MGS4. Too contrived, too many cutscenes.

GTAIII San Andreas - Loved Vice City, hated SA.

GTA4

Twilight Princess also bored the socks off of me.

It's hard to hate a game. And it's hard to think of a game as a "Masterpiece" that I didn't like.

Oblivion - sounded fun on paper. However, the level up system made the game non-immersive.

Most Final Fantasy games after FF9. Just not fun anymore. I bought FFXII and was very dissapointed, not because the gameplay immitated MMORPG. Rather because it felt like a "heal fest".

There are many generic shooters that I will not name, especially on the XBOX360 and PS3, that are "masterpieces" but disappointing to people like me who have played it all before.

I thought I was the only person who felt that way about San Andreas.

Twilight Princess Wii

When I first started the game I felt like a little kid at Christmas. Zelda is one of my all time favorite franchises. About half way through the game I found myself having less fun. It started feeling like a chore playing the game. I gave it up and traded it in before I ever finished.

KZ2 PS3

I was very excited on launch day and devoted several hours to the single player, getting use to the controls. When I hit the last few levels it suffered from Twilight Princess syndrome. The last few levels felt more like work than fun. I did not care for the controls and never fully got use to them. Multi player was not as fun as all the hype.

GTA SA PS2

Did not like the story or characters.

GTA IV 360 (still up in the air)

Loved it at first then got bored. Sitting at about 55% complete. Maybe I will give it a go again soon.

Assasins Creed 360

See GTA IV

Resistance Fall of Man PS3

Save still sitting at the last level. Never even fought the end boss if there is one. Stopped playing one day and have never picked it up again.

Grand Theft Auto - pretty much all of them. San Andreas has been the only one I've liked a bit. The games have always had much potential but terrible gameplay (namely controls and in IV, camera) has ruined them all. Especially IV was terrible - not only were the controls terrible, the camera as well was. It did not know whether to be free or to follow.

Other than that, I can't say I've actually hated any other "masterpieces". There are a few overrated, though. Half-Life 2, for example, is one. It was absolutely nothing special. It's a good game but nowhere near a masterpiece. The first Half-Life is something I might just accept as a masterpiece... Although that's not my personal opinion. Then there's Halo; I've played the first one on PC for a couple of hours. Don't know if it's just the beginning but I think I haven't played many games that are so boring.

And finally there's Metal Gear Solid 4; it's acclaimed as the best game ever and so on, but it's definitely the worst game in the series. Most people who love it seem to be rather new to the series, and indeed, it is less hardcore, or more casul, whichever you prefer, than the previous games in the series. It's not a bad game but definitely not worth the praise. To a lesser extent, the same goes for MGS3 as well. The first MGS was the most balanced game, although personally I like MGS2 the best (but can see why people may not like it).
