People from all sides talk out of their ass.

Greenburg quickly forgets that the PS3 may have had Killzone 2 (for only 2-days mind you) but it also isn't coming off a price drop like it was in February 2008. "Hemorrhaging" my ass.
If anything shouldn't Sony make more money this February on PS3 sales as opposed to last February's PS3 sales due to lowered production costs? Not sure how much the Yen affects it so of course I could be wrong. |
2 things.
A game hyped like Killzone 2 will do the vast majority of sales the first couple of days, especially its impact on hardware sales.
Your not still coming off of a price drop 4 months after the price drop. The only thing to say with all of the other current gen consoles increasing in sales is that the PS3 is loosing market visibility compared to the 360 and Wii.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
Read the article, it says retail partners say that the PS3 is hemorrhaging and that PS2 owners are moving to the 360 instead of the PS3

Woooow, SF4 was MASSIVELY undertracked. 360k off between both versions? Wow. So that actually puts the WW sales around 1.6 million. Capcom aims for 1.7 million for the quarter. Looks like they'll get their wish. Glad the game isn't actually a huge disappointment sales wise (and thank GOD it outsold that poor excuse of a game SC4).
How exactly do things get undertracked? Where does VGC get it's data from that leaves it open to such large discrepancies? This is actually a serious question---I'm genuinely curious.

of course price drops effect sales months afterwards. howelse do you explain 360 sales now and ps3 sales last year. if 360 doesnt have a price cut before next year it sales will be down just like the ps3 this year

Actually, I think the data answered my own question. The NPD data included the CE while I don't believe the VGC data did. Considering that the rest of the data is accurate, I'm going to posit that this is the reason for the discrepancy. The #s on VGC are probably correct for the non-CE bundled additions and, most likely, accurately reflect how the game is selling currently---VGC just missed that first 250k (though that's a LOT to miss, it makes sense). Won't know for sure until the March #s come out. If the March #s match, then we'll know that this was the case.
vgc does try to collect dat for all skus. ce should be in the data

"Should" is the key word.
If the March #s are also undertracked, we'll know this is the case.
Nintendo response:
Nintendo’s Wii Play Surpasses 10 Million Units Sold in the United States
Wii Play™, a collection of nine mini-games, has now sold more than 10 million units in the United States alone since its debut in February 2007, according to figures released today by the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Wii Play, now the top-selling software on all consoles and portable systems in the United States, comes packaged with a Wii Remote™ controller.
“Wii Play mini-games are fun and they get people playing together,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller, that indicates that there are now more than 10 million people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes. When added to the 12.7 million Wii Remote controllers that have sold separately, this reinforces the growing ‘social gaming’ trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online.”
Wii™ system sales were up about 74 percent over February 2008, and Wii and Nintendo DS™ finished February as the top-selling hardware systems. Wii sold nearly 753,000, bringing its lifetime U.S. sales to nearly 19 million, while Nintendo DS sold nearly 588,000 for a lifetime U.S. total of nearly 29 million.
Nintendo DS™ demonstrated continued strength, as “evergreen” games like Mario Kart™ DS (launched November 2005) and New Super Mario Bros.™ (launched May 2006) again placed among the top sellers for February. The strong showing for Nintendo DS hardware and software demonstrates continued consumer interest in the portable system as the United States preps for the April 5 launch of the Nintendo DSi™ system, the third iteration of the hardware.
Five games made for Nintendo systems finished in the top 10 best-sellers of February. These include Wii Fit™ at No. 1 with nearly 644,000 sold, Wii Play at No. 2 with nearly 386,000 sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 6 with nearly 263,000 sold, Mario Kart DS at No. 8 with nearly 145,000 sold and New Super Mario Bros. at No. 9 with more than 144,000 sold.
Third-party Wii and Nintendo DS games also posted strong sales, with titles from LucasArts, Ubisoft, Majesco, Disney Interactive Studios, Electronic Arts and Activision/Blizzard all placing in the top 30 for the month.
