Forums - Gaming - Graphics debate: Realism vs Cartoonish

It really all depends on the game because real only works on some game and fake only works on some games. How would someone make Pixel Junk look real half the enemies are fake what refrence would you have for realism. Or something like elffunk would be just dumb looking real.

I dunno exactly what you are saying, but I think you could make any type of game with Pixar level animation and have it be an enjoyable gaming experience. A Mario Kart-esque racer with Pixar graphics would be amazing. A stylized, cartoonish shooter (like the South Park game for N64) with Pixar graphics could be equally amazing. Obviously a platformer or RPG with Pixar graphics would be out of this world.

Consider also the shift in the game market this generation. Casuals can make or break a system. So knowing this, imagine this scenario:

A mother or father are sitting with their kids watching Saturday morning cartoons. During a commercial break a trailer comes on. It looks like the next summer blockbuster from Pixar. Aliens and monsters are battling each other, the kids are going bonkers and telling you that you're taking them to go see it, and then the trailer ends with "Coming to a Playstation 3 near you, Summer 2009"

A commercial like that leading up to the release of either the Nextbox or PS4 could snag a lot of the casuals back from Nintendo.

Depends mostly on the gerne, cute games I usually prefer to be cartoonish (lighting and detail and such being of less value, like Mario 64 or the Simpson Arcade game). Thrilling/dramatic games like Killzone 2 or Heavy Rain games games I usually prefer to be more realisticly styled.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I think Fat Princess will be pretty interesting since it is a combination of a violent game, rpg, and adorable cartoony graphics. That's why Fat Princess will be huge.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Each has its own place, but I usually prefer cartoonish.

I usually prefer colour vibrant worlds... Stylized, semi realism and cartoony.

Realism do wow me for a while, because the technical achievement is amazing but it doesn't hold my interest.

Realism with or without vibrant colors, depending on game (strong colors prefered in fantasy/RPG games).

I not prefer cartoonish grafix generally. They're only the best option in a few extreme cases, like perhaps Zelda (and in kiddy games of course).

I usually hate stylized grafix. But overdone grafix effects are great. Like very strong high dynamic range lighting/bloom, I love it.

I like both. To be honest, it's like asking if I like animation or live-action.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I prefer a graphic style that ages well. The problem when people go photorealism with games, is they tend not to age well.
