Forums - Sony - Sony Faces Heat From Game Publishers

I see a lot of companies and analysts jumped on the price cut bandwagon... I don't understand why virtually no one outside of these forums has actually calculated the impact on Sony's finances. Do people really understand the realities of the hole Sony is in?

Maybe if the dollar/euro strengthen a bit we could see a price cut in the holiday season... but even that is a bit of a stretch IMO.

I actually think the PS3 is selling well at the moment, just because it isn't selling as well as the 360 or Wii doesn't mean its doing bad at all ...

and lets be honest I'm sure sony don't even want to sell 300k PS3's a week ... that really would bleed them dry. I think they need to concentrate on making more quality games and perhaps cutting dev time down. Get more software out to make as much profit as possible.

PS3 sales in the next 12 months are likely to total 14 million, compared with 28 million Wiis and 9.7 million Xbox 360s, according to the Daiwa Institute of Research, a Tokyo-based researcher and consultant.

Oh well at least we know to stop paying attention to anything coming out of the Daiwa Institute of Research

I'm confused... why would Sony need to drop the price when they're already going to outsell the 360 by 4.3 million over the next 12 months?

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

I'm curious as to why anyone would think the PS3 would outsell the 360 by any amount at this point. Since MS is based in the US, they are actually in the best position to institute a price cut. So even if Sony could find a way, MS would likely counter with a price cut of their own. This would nullify most of if not all of the potential sales gain the PS3 would see from a price cut. The PS3 couldn't outsell the 360 last year and honestly I think that was their best shot to gain any ground. If Sony could have cut the price, they would have last holiday season. There is no way they'd let MS pound them like that during the busiest part of the shopping year.

With GTA IV sales 50/50 and RE5 sales 55/45 in favor of PS3. I don't think Publishers are in any position to put pressure on Sony.

The RE5 gap will probably go in favor of the 360 since the game has been out in Japan for longer.

I don't see it in Sony's short term plan to reduce the price, especially with the restructuring going on. The bigger issue at hand here is when the Wii passes 50% marketshare of current gen home consoles. This is a harder thing for a developer and/or publisher to ignore.

Thus far, development for Sony systems has not been a failure. Profits are being made on several of the quality PS3 games. The difference here is the economic status of the developers and how much they can afford to spend in development. HD development isn't cheap, and to make a solid HD game, it quickly escalates to 30 mil +. The economy isn't helping anyone out in this matter either.

I hate analysts.

Every one of their their predictions are not news worthy.

We'll miss you George.

This part sticks out to me the most. There are people out there that believe the PS3 will outsell the 360 by close to 5 million this year? Lol, Crazzyman must have a new job.
